Life imprisonment in Spain

Currently, there is no life imprisonment in Spain. Spanish laws prescribe long sentences ranging from a minimum of 20 years up to 40 years. In cases of terrorism and mass murder, courts can increase sentences according to the circumstances and the number of deaths such as in the case of the Madrid Train Bombings, where the suspects were sentenced to over 40,000 years in prison. Forty years' imprisonment is generally the maximum sentence for a single murder.
