Lights Out is an upcoming 2016 American supernatural horror film directed by David F. Sandberg in his major directorial debut, written by Eric Heisserer, and produced by Lawrence Grey, Heisserer, and James Wan, based on Sandberg's 2013 award-winning short film of the same name. The film stars Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman and Maria Bello.

The film, much like the original short film it was adapted upon, revolves around a supernatural entity only visible in the dark, which terrorizes a local family when a child sees it for the first time, which the sister recognizes possibly as a former childhood friend.

After the success of the short film and its viral status, Sandberg announced a feature film adaption of the short film. The film is a collaboration between Wan's Atomic Monster and Grey's Grey Matter Productions. Principal photography began on June 29, 2015. It is scheduled to be released on July 22, 2016 through Warner Bros. Pictures.

Synopsis

Rebecca (Teresa Palmer), after hearing from her younger brother Martin (Gabriel Bateman), is being stalked by a supernatural entity only visible in the dark, which she links to a failed experiment with a childhood friend that happened many years ago.

On April 2016, in an interview with Grey, she said that the short film was basically about something that made you terrified of the dark:

'I saw that thing out of the corner of my eye. Is that a tree? Is that my laundry? Or is it something more sinister than that?'

She had also stated that the film had cost $5 million to make and produce.[2]

The film has also been selected to premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival in June.[6]

Principal photography on the film began on June 29, 2015.[7][3][5] Filming wrapped on August 5, 2015.[8] Production will not be completed until July 22.
