Linaria is a genus of small passerine birds in the finch family (Fringillidae) that contains the twite and the linnets.
The species were formerly grouped in the genus Carduelis but phylogenetic analysis using mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences found that the genus was polyphyletic.[1] The genus was therefore split into monophyletic genera. The twite and the linnets were moved to the resurrected genus Linaria.[2]
The name Linaria was coined in 1802 by the German naturalist Johann Matthäus Bechstein.[3]
The genus contains four species:[2]
- Twite (Linaria flavirostris)
- Common linnet (Linaria cannabina)
- Yemen linnet (Linaria yemenensis)
- Warsangli linnet (Linaria johannis)
