Lion's Head Lighthouse is an active lighthouse on Georgian Bay, Ontario, Canada near the village of Lion's Head. The present lighthouse is a replica built by local highschool students.
History
The first lighthouse was a lantern erected atop a pole, placed on the outer end of the breakwater, in 1903 which emitted a red light. In 1913 was built a wooden square frustum tower with balcony and lantern on the breakwater but was severely damaged by the wind force; it was suddenly repaired. The lighthouse was then damaged by fire in 1933 and the Canadian Coast Guard dismantled it in 1969. It was replaced by a metal pole which emitted a flashing light because the old wooden lighthouse was broken beyond repair. In 1983 the students of the Bruce Peninsula District School completed the construction of the replica of the old wooden lighthouse with funds from the Lion’s Head Rotary Club; the lighthouse was placed on the shoreline. A violent storm damaged the light in the spring 2000 and the Canadian Coast Guard decided to replace it with the student’s replica which was moved at the end of the pier and activated. [1]
