Lisa Corinne Davis is an American visual artist who is known for her intricate map-like paintings. Her paintings occupy a point somewhere between cartooning and cartography, abstraction and figuration. Her work is an exploration of racial, social, and psychological identity, and through the development of her painting lexicon she expresses her personal experience as an African-American woman in the 21st Century, and, by extension, that of an individual in modern society. The images are oddly familiar but essentially ephemeral, visually resonant but also deliberately enigmatic.[1]

She is currently a Professor of Painting and Combined Media at Hunter College.[2] Lisa also has taught at Parsons School of Design, Cooper Union School of Art, and Yale University.[3]

Davis lives and works in Brooklyn and Hudson, New York and is represented by Gerald Peters Gallery, New York, NY, Galerie Gris, Hudson, NY and The Mayor Gallery, London.[3]

Education

From 1976-78 she attended Cornell University.[4] In 1980, she attained a Bachelor in Fine Arts from the Pratt Institute in New York City.[4] In 1993 she attained a Masters in Fine Arts from Hunter College.[4]
