Modern golden period of Carnatic music

The 1930s to the 1960s, often referred to as the modern Golden era of Carnatic music,[1][2] was a period in which a number of Carnatic vocalists of high calibre, great skill, and musical insight rose to fame as concert star-musicians.[3][4]

D. K. Pattammal, M. L. Vasanthakumari and M. S. Subbulakshmi, commonly referred to as the female trinity of Carnatic music,[5] were in their teenage years when they began their careers, and rose to fame during this era.[3] Other female singers that followed included K. B. Sundarambal,[3] N. C. Vasanthakokilam,[3] T. Brinda,[3] T. Muktha,[3] as well as Radha Jayalakshmi.[3]

The leading male vocalists during this period were Muthiah Bhagavathar,[3] Mysore Vasudevachar,Chintalapalli Venkata Rao, D Subbaramaiah,[6] Asthan Vidwan Chintalapalli Ramachandra Rao, Kanchipuram Naina Pillai, Kanchipuram N.S.Krishnaswamy Iyengar, Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer,[3]Nagercoil Sthanu Bhagavathar, Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar,[3] Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar,[3] Musiri Subramania Iyer,[3] Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer,[3] Alathur Brothers,[3] G. Jayaraman, M.S.Gopalakrishnan Nagercoil S Harihara Iyer among others, excelled in violin, while Palghat Mani Iyer, Nagercoil S Ganesa Iyer, Palani Subramaniam Pillai, C.S. Murugabhupathy, Palghat R. Raghu varanasi ghantaiah sastryvaranasi brahmaiaiah sastryvaranasi gopalam sastry and Mavelikkara Velukkutty Nair redefined the role of mridangam in concerts in the recent past. Sharaba Shastry, Palladam Sanjeeva Rao, T.K.Radhakrishnan, T. R. Mahalingam, Dindigul S.P. Natarajan, T. Viswanathan and Thyagarajan were famous flute players. Some of the well known veena players include Veena Dhanammal, Karaikkudi Brothers, Doraiswamy Iyengar, Emani Sankara Sastry, Veena Chitti Babu, S. Balachander and K. S. Narayanaswamy .

The mridangists who fall under this category includes Karaikudi R Mani, T S Nandakumar, Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman, Late Nagercoil S Ganesa Iyer, T. K. Murthy, Guruvayur Dorai, Mannargudi Easwaran, T. V. Gopalakrishnan, Srimushnam V. Raja Rao, I. Sivakumar and J. Vaidhyanathan. T. H. Vinayakram, T.H. Subash Chandran and N. Govindarajan are Ghatam players who are in this category.

N. Ramani, K S Gopalakrishnan, K. Bhaskaran, Sikkil Sisters,A V Prakash, Shashank Subramanyam, are the most well known flute players of today, while E. Gayathri, S. Balachander, Kalpakam Swaminathan, Bonala Sankara Prakash and Rugmini Gopalakrishnan are known in the same way for playing the Veena. Kadri Gopalnath is similarly known for his Carnatic talents on the saxophone, U. Srinivas for Mandolin, while N. Ravikiran is known in the same way for playing several stringed instruments, most notably the Chitraveena/Gottuvadhyam and R. Prasanna popularly known as Guitar Prasanna, plays carnatic music on the Electric Guitar.

U Rajesh, U P Raju and his wife Nagamani and SM Subhani are notable musicians who play the mandolin.

R. Prasanna also known as Guitar Prasanna, plays carnatic music on the Electric Guitar with equal command and authenticity as played on any other popular instrument.
