List of Dragon Booster characters
This is a list of characters appearing in the animated television series Dragon Booster.
Main characters
Artha Penn
- Voice Actor: Matt Hill
Artha Tannis Penn is the son of Connor Penn and older brother to Lance. Artha was an ordinary 16-year-old teenager who helped his father run the dragon stables at Penn Racing and dreamed of a life writing video games. Probably as a result of a lifetime of stable chores, he wanted nothing to do with dragon racing and little to do with dragons. But that all changed when he was chosen by Beau, the gold dragon of legend, to be the Dragon Booster. Now he and Beau are charged with the task of saving the world from an impending dragon-human war and uniting dragons and humans once and for all time.
Artha's challenge is to realize his full potential and release the power of his dragon Beau. To do so, Artha must overcome his immaturity and occasional selfishness. Artha tends to look for the easy way out a little too often rather than working and training hard. Also, having been chosen to be the Dragon Booster gives him a bloated ego at times. These flaws tend to get him, and Beau, into trouble frequently in the early episodes. As the show progresses, Artha's character grows and these flaws diminish.
Artha began street racing to raise money after Penn Stables was damaged in an explosion and his father Connor went missing. Mortis wants Artha to race as training to become a better team with his dragon Beau. Artha's is adept at dragon racing video games and this experience has apparently helped him pick up the real sport quickly. He is also coached by Kitt, who Artha has taken a liking to. The first few episodes of the first series also suggested that Artha has a crush on Kitt, but this was never explored in later episodes.
In Dragon City, Artha's identity as the Dragon Booster is known only to Mortis, Lance, Kitt, Parmon, Stewardd, their dragons Wyldfyr, Cyrano, Fracshun and, of course, Beau. Outside Dragon City, Propheci, Reepyr and the rest of the Prophets crew learned Artha is the Dragon Booster in the episode "The Lost Track of Doom," but they do not seem to have told anyone else.
Dragon Booster: There is some speculation among fans that Artha might not be Connor's own son since Connor and Lance are both red-heads while Artha has black hair. However, there is no other evidence in the show that Artha might have been adopted, so this is merely speculation.
In addition to his friends listed above, the Dragon Booster has gained a number of allies throughout the episodes. These include Phistus, Stewardd, Commander Faier, Reepyr and on occasion Wulph. It is also possible that Libris and Propheci may be willing to be allies in the future.
Artha's main enemies are Word and Moordryd Paynn. Moordryd in particular is Artha's rival ever since he tried to steal Beau in episode 1. Neither Word nor Moordryd yet suspect that Artha might be the Dragon Booster.
Trivia: The lettering on the back of Artha's racing jacket says "ARTHA" but, for some unknown reason, it is a mirror image of how the letters should appear. Artha's middle name comes from Tannis the Wise, the dragon priest who instructed Connor.
Lance Penn
- Voice Actor: Kathleen Barr
Lance Patrik Penn is Artha's little brother. Refreshingly, Lance is not just the typical comic relief side-kick kid character that appears in most shows. Although he is only 10 years old, he at times acts with more maturity and insight than his years would normally warrant. This is particularly true in episodes like "Faster Than Fear" and "Wraith Booster" where Lance plays a key role in the story. When Artha gets into a tight spot, Lance will help out any way that he is able. But he is still a kid at heart and enjoys playing video games and occasionally teasing his older brother (and perhaps causing a little mischief as well).
Like most kids his age, Lance is trying to grow up but is occasionally frustrated when the older teenagers would not take him seriously or listen to what he has to say.
Lance's dragon is Fracshun and they seem to make a good team. The series hinted that Lance would one day be the Energy Booster.
Kitt Raada Wonn
- Voice Actor: Lenore Zann
At 16 years of age, Kitt is one of the best street racers in Dragon City. She and her dragon Wyldfyr form a strong team that is difficult to beat on the race track. Kitt is sure of herself, strong minded and a bit feisty. She believes in Artha and wants to help him prevent the dragon-human war in any way she can. She routinely gives him advice to help him become a better racer. Kitt likes Artha, but at the same time, would not hesitate to tell him when he is doing something dumb or selfish. Kitt tried to ride Beau in episode 1 before he had chosen Artha, but she was rejected by him. Even so, it appears she will have a strong role to play working with Artha and Beau to stop Word Paynn. It was implied at the end of the series that she was to take the role of the Fire Booster, who was also female.
Kitt lives in the Down City section of Dragon City, and she knows her way around Squire's End and Down City better than Artha. It is revealed that she is an orphan who was raised by the Dragon Flare Crew as a young child. No other family information has been released. She had also never previously joined any crews, because of her fiery sense of independence. Kitt likes Artha a lot and, therefore, finally chose to be part of his crew. Kitt's male dragon is Wyldfyr, whom she most likely received from the Dragon Flare Crew.
Parmon Sean
- Voice Actor: Lee Tockar
Parmon (or just Parm, as his friends call him) is Artha's best friend. At age 17, Parmon is a technical wiz, though sometimes the things he builds do not quite work out or last as long as they should in theory. Parm is not exactly the bravest member of the Penn Racing team and would much prefer to run and avoid fights. However, if his friends are threatened, he does not hesitate to come to their aid.
Parmon is the oldest member of the group and tends to think Artha and the others should listen to him. He helps Artha during races but is frequently annoyed when Artha does not heed his advice. Parm likes to play things by the book with well thought out plans and generally coaches Artha to race with a more conservative style. He is annoyed when Artha chooses to improvise or act impulsively.
Parmon's family is never seen, though it is known that his mother is a history teacher at the academy (revealed in "Into the Fire") and his father is a government official who specializes in technology around Dragon City. This is where Parmon gets all his interests and hobbies. Where Parmon lives is unknown, though he frequently sleeps over at Penn Stables. Parm's male dragon is Cyrano. He also prefers to be power booster in later years
Mortis
- Voice Actor: Gary Chalk
Mortis is the only known dragon priest in Dragon City. He is Artha's mentor and trains him in the ancient ways so Artha can fulfill the prophecy. He gave Artha the ancient Dragon Booster armband on their first meeting when Artha discovers the Dragon Temple deep below the Penn Racing Stables. Mortis knows many legends and secrets, and knows much about what lies in the wasteland surrounding Dragon City. He is also highly trained in the ancient fighting techniques.
Until "The Return of Drakkus, Part 2" (episode 26), nothing was known about his past and Mortis seems to have wanted it that way. He appeared on the scene in episode 2 shortly after Connor disappeared in episode 1. Most fans picked up that he was Connor in disguise, and this was finally confirmed when Mortis revealed himself to Artha and his friends in episode 26. In this episode, Connor explained that Artha needed to believe in himself in order to release the full power of both Beau and himself, and that Artha needed to do so without relying on his father as a crutch.
In "Broken Bonds," it was revealed for the first time that Word Paynn is aware of Mortis' existence and both refer the other as an old enemy. This apparently means they have had encounters and conflicts prior to the time of episode 1, though they have never met during the course of the show.
In "Return of Drakkus, Part 2" we learn that Mortis was an Elite Class racer 30 years ago and one of his chief rivals was Drakkus. This means that Connor was disguising himself as Mortis long before Artha was even born. Mortis and Drakkus do not know the other's true identity.
While Connor was hiding himself as Mortis he rarely left the subterranean dragon temple beneath Penn Stables. Except in "broken bonds","Prophet's Motive" and "Return of Drakkus, Part 2," we never see him talk to anyone except Artha and his friends.
Word Paynn
- Voice Actor: Mark Oliver
Word Paynn is the primary antagonist of the series. Like Mortis, Word knows much about the ancient myths and legends, and is intent on capturing or controlling the dragon of legend in order to start a new war between dragons and humans.
Word was once best friends with dragon breeder Connor Penn, and also trained with him in the Ancient Order of Dragon Priests, but broke his friendship with Connor out of a long-lasting, crucial argument and loathes the Penn name still. He was kicked out of the Ancient Order because of his fiendish (and foiled) attempts to start another dragon-human war, and experimenting with dragon control gear. Word believes that dragons should rule the earth, and it has gone to the point where his insanity blinds him from the equality of both dragons and humans. Word has succeeded in many things besides gear manufacturing, such as creating liquid black draconium, an artificial black and gold dragon (he actually created a chromatic dragon out of Brutaris, Phistus' dragon (more on Brutaris in List of Dragons in Dragon Booster), but Dragon Booster put a stop to his attempt at destroying the city), and even wraith gear designed to control humans. Word's wife's name was Zulay Paynn,( she is also the mother of Moordryd) She was loved dearly by Word and she survived the ancient Shadow Track. She died as a result of testing one of Word's Black Disruption Pods. Word felt very guilty, knowing she did it to protect the other members of their crew.
Drakkus
Drakkus is a powerful warrior and is revealed to be Word Paynn (names himself after one of the moons of draconis).Dragon Booster must face him in "The Return of Drakkus - Part I & II". He wears an ancient armour, it is unknown how he acquired it. The armour belonged to an ancient warrior that existed 3000 years ago. Drakkus is able to use a powerful technique known as Mag-Claw as can Mortis, and eventually both sons, Artha Penn and Moordryd Paynn.
Drakkus regards the Dragon Booster as weak and untrained. His main goal appears to be to destroy the Dragon Booster and use the Dragon of Legend to its full ability. Drakkus was defeated by the Dragon Booster when he learned to release the dragon and the human. He fled but returned in later episodes.
Drakkus rides a very large black draconium dragon, Abandonn, (named after the second moon of draconis) except his design is black and dark green with a red stomach. It is unknown how Abandonn's gains this colour change when Word uses his as Drakkus, although the change is probably similar to the change Beau and Decepshun go through when their riders make their transformation.
Moordryd Paynn
- Voice Actor: Trevor Devall
Moordryd is the son of Word Paynn, and the 16-year-old nemesis of Artha Penn. Moordryd is a basic, stereotypical "bad guy". Usually stealing gear, or dragons with his crew "The Dragon Eyes". It has been shown in earlier episodes that Moordryd will do anything to gain his father's praise, most of which is what leads him to stealing and cheating in races. Moordryd is easily agitated.
In episode 11 "Pride of the Hero" it is revealed that Moordryd is a person that needs admiration and someone who will look for the best in him until they find it, like Lance Penn did in episode 19, "The Wraith Booster". After that episode is when noticeable character development is taking place within Moordryd. After that episode, a change in him is observable, as he has begun to see exactly what will get him to admiration, and what will make him the hero, giving his character more depth, and also making him a better point of relation.
Over the course of the last season and a half, Moordryd's personality has changed, to an extent. He still participates in crime as the Shadow Booster, but his character is changing to that of a good guy. The final episode, "Damaged Goods", is where this change is noticeable. At first he gives Artha a serious injury as the Shadow Booster, but then after the "Dragball" game he shakes hands with Artha congratulating him, even though they tied and got accepted into the academy.
Connor Penn
- Voice Actor: Gary Chalk
Connor Jackson Penn is the father of Artha and Lance. He is an orphan who, along with Word Paynn, was raised by the Dragon Priesthood since he was a small child. While in the priesthood, Connor took the prediction of a coming dragon-human war seriously and began a program to breed gold dragons back into existence to fulfill a prophecy that a gold dragon of legend would come to stop the war and unite dragons and humans. After a lifetime of work, he was successful and bred Beau whom he raised from a pup. Connor was also the bearer of the gold star amulet of the Dragon Booster. It was apparently passed down through the ages by the Dragon Priesthood and given to Connor so he could in turn pass it on whoever was chosen to be the Dragon Booster by the gold dragon.
Connor disappeared mysteriously either shortly before or as the result of an explosion that occurred at Penn residence in episode 1. He was not seen again until episode 26. See Mortis for more details.
Connor's wife (and Artha and Lance's mother) is named Fira Penn, all that is known is that she gave birth to Artha, the same day Beau hatched into a baby dragon. She is known to be beautiful and wise often teasing her husband and helping him breed more dragons, she knows all about the dragon human war and was trying to stop it. Fira later grew sick shortly after Lance was born and died leaving Artha to help take care of his brother.
Cain
- Voice Actor: Scott McNeil
Cain is Moordryd Paynn's right hand man and lieutenant of the Dragon Eyes Down City crew. Like Parm to Artha, Cain is probably Moordryd's best friend. His dragon is Coershun, a fierce, black draconium Psi-class dragon.
Cain is loyal to the Dragon Eyes and rather smart, but at times his cowardice and ridiculous phobias gets the better of him and he ends up retreating instead of helping the rest of the Dragon Eyes fight. Like Kitt, he is rather sarcastic and cynical. He loves to get under Moordryd's skin by taunting him and making dry remarks.
As much of a good Dragon Eye as Cain is, he is somewhat of a coward, but enjoys tormenting members of the Penn Racing Crew. He'll joke around when he is bothering them, and that is his weakness. (Like in Episode 32 "When Opposites Attract", when he captured Lance, but Lance stepped on his foot.)
The muscular Cain has a tattoo of the Dragon Eye crew symbol on his forehead and has dark dreadlocks and gold-brown eyes. He wears a dull-colored gray and maroon outfit, not concealing much of the top besides a few straps. Like Parm, his skin tone is darker, and he is 17 years old and 5'10" tall. After thinking Moordryd betrayed him in the episode "Cain's mutiny" he revolts against him and supports shadow booster. Later Moordryd revealed to him that he is the Shadow Booster and Cain calmed down.
Side characters
Pyrrah
- Voice Actor: Nicole Oliver
Pyrrah is the fiery leader of the dangerous Down City Dragon Flares Crew and represents them on the Council of Twelve. Her dragon, Phorrj, is a red draconium Magma-class dragon with the same temperamental attitude as his rider.
Pyrrah is one to be reckoned with. She is rather fair and does not play dirty, sometimes being temperamental, but thus far, most of the times we have seen Pyrrah, she is unwittingly being used by Word Paynn in one way or another (in "Into the Fire", Word takes control of her with a black mind control pod to try and seize Artha Penn's dragon). As a result, we have yet to see what her "true colors" are and whether she is friend, foe, or neutral to the Dragon Booster's cause. She uses a strange weapon (Many have dubbed it a "fire axe" because of the resemblance) that generates red draconium energy and has a little brother named Sparkk. On the many occasions that Moordryd manages to divide the council against itself, Pyrrah has sided with him.
Pyrrah wears a purple suit and a red coat with a flame design. She has grayish-purple eyes and flaring red hair. She’s 17 years old and her height is 5'5".
Phistus
- Voice Actor: Andrew Francis
The brawny Phistus is the leader of the Grip of the Dragon Down City Crew, and also leads the Down City Crew Council of Twelve. He gets irritated with the constant chaos between Down City crews, and longs to resolve this. His green draconium Bull-class dragon, Brutaris, is very much like him, a strong figure with a good heart.
Phistus strongly believes that the Down City crews need to insure peace between each other; however, with Moordryd and Word interfering, he needs the help of other crews and the Dragon Booster to stop this problem. His temper rises rather quickly if he’s extremely annoyed, and he tries to maintain order in the Council and will use force if necessary. He carries a large hammer built of green draconium and is a great jouster, as are most of his Grip of the Dragon crew members.
Phistus wears a green suit and has a tattoo on his right arm and armor bands on his left. He has brown eyes and is at age 18 and 2 months with a height of 6'2".
- Nickname(s): Phisty, Phisthead (by the counsel members)
Khatah
- Voice Actor: Lee Tockar
Khatah is the distinguished leader of the Inner Order Down City Crew and the consecutive champion in the Horn of Libris competition. He represents the Inner Order on the Council of Twelve. Khatah was the best student at the Racing Academy and scored above ninety-eight percent on all his tests. He usually works with Sarjo, another Inner Order member. His dragon, Shock-Ra, is a blue draconium Energy-class dragon.
Khatah can be close minded and rather selfish. He initially denounced Artha as just another immature racer after losing the Horn of Libris competition, but changes his mind when Artha and Kitt attempt to rescue him from Moordryd's compound when he tries to take it back. He also attempted to help Parmon and Cyrano when both were possessed by a powerful Blue Draconium bone mark. He favors slim mag-staffs and is skilled with martial arts. Being leader of the Inner Order Down Crew and rider of a blue draconium dragon, he is also a likely candidate for the position of the Energy Booster.
Khatah has indigo hair and bright blue eyes. He wears an elaborate blue and gold outfit with the lightning bolt insignia of the Inner Order. He is 22 years old and his height is 5'7". His name seems to be a play-on pun of kata, a method of martial arts.
Stewardd
- Voice Actor: Samuel Vincent
Stewardd is the leader of the secretive Keepers crew, who once helped the original Dragon Booster three thousand years ago. His crew is very good at building effective new gear, unlike Parm. Stewardd may be small, but when it comes to hiding and being swift on his feet, he can be depended upon. His dragon is Gunny, a light green draconium Scavenger-class dragon.
Stewardd seems to be a play-on pun of the word stewart, as in a helper of a knight, or steward.
- Nickname(s): mouse (by Moordryd)
Reepyr
- Voice Actor: Michael Kopsa
Reepyr is the human leader of the legendary Prophets Crew, controlled by Propheci (m). The Prophets once helped the original Dragon Booster, but they are now against him. Reepyr is being controlled by the orange draconium Control-class dragon Propheci, the lethal dragon leader of the Prophets.
Reepyr is used by Propheci until the Dragon Booster and his friends take on the challenge of the Track of Doom. It is then that Propheci decides to work together with humans and dragons, but Reepyr stays under Propheci’s influence. It is only later that Propheci decides to imprison Reepyr and the other human Prophets. Reepyr acts rather troubled, and will stop at nothing to cease the dangerous orange dragons from gaining control of Dragon City. Due to the nature of the Prophets Crew and the recent infighting among them, Reepyr and his crew have no representation on the Council of Twelve. Recently Reepyr has had some success uniting his crew and has imprisoned Propheci.
Reepyr has rather greenish skin, red hair and dark-colored eyes, and wears an orange suit. He is 17 years old and is 5'6" tall. His name is a pun of reaper, a name used to describe a killer.
Wulph
- Voice Actor: Trevor Devall
Wulph is the authoritative leader of the Army of the Dragon Crew and their representation on the Council of Twelve. He likes to have the last word and makes sure that nothing happens to those he believes he is responsible. He usually works with more than one of his crewmembers in several situations, but if it is one man, is it Trakkyrr or Ferryt? His dragon is Hyve, a sly purple draconium Pack-class dragon.
Wulph tends to dislike his opinions and suggestions being criticized and/or taken for granted, especially when other people try influencing him to change his decisions. At times, he tends to take situations that do not concern him into his hands, and usually sends tracking dragons after those unsuspecting to it. Before, he worked for Word Paynn, but now it seems only an interesting prospect will sway him back, as now his crew works and thinks for themselves.
He is good at certain things, like working in teams, but he is not a great racer, as he is often the first eliminated in races to get into Academy, as seen in Season Three. In addition he often sides with Moordryd in his attempts to divide the Council against itself.
Wulph has lime green hair and indigo eyes, with a scar across his right eye. His outfit is purple and gold, and he is 5'5" tall and 17 years old. His name seems to be a play-on pun of the animal wolf.
Vociferous
- Voice Actor: Samuel Vincent
Vociferous is the sly, smooth-taking leader of the distrustful Voice of the Dragon Crew and their representation on the Council of Twelve. At times, he will assume the identity of a director. Like Moordryd and his Dragon Eyes, Vociferous and his Voices will use deceptive tactics, but to blind others instead of rousing a high level of suspicion. He works together with Spynn, a female lieutenant of the Voices (and at some times, behind the camera). His dragon is Swavvy, but her appearance is not really confirmed. For example, in episode 20, "Artha the Drac", and episode 24, "The Mechanist", Vociferous is shown riding a Bull-Class-like dragon with light green coloring. But in episode 33, "The Defiants", and episode 37 "Cain's Mutiny", he is shown riding a dark turquoise colored dragon with a body similar to that of a Nautilus-class dragon. She is however, a Turquoise Sonic-Class Dragon and thus likely the latter.
Vociferous loves to fool around and have his fun by making people humiliate and embarrass themselves. His deception and manipulation have slipped around without much suspicion, and he takes advantage of a situation whenever he has the chance. He is quick-witted, but is impatient and incompetent, therefore leading to problems in both physical and social skills. He fights with a mag-staff and is skilled in acrobatics. On the many occasions that Moordryd manages to divide the council against itself, Vociferous has sided with him.
Vociferous seems to like setting new fashion trends with his turquoise and blue clothes, and has a bit of an elfish look to him. He has spiky pink hair and green eyes, and his height and age are unknown. (He seems to be as tall as Parm, however, this shows in an episode where Artha's height differs from Parm’s. He tends to act slightly more mature than Artha or Moordryd, so he may be older than 16.) His name is from a play-off of the word vociferous, meaning "a loud or noisy cry; talkative, vocal".
Race Marshall Budge
- Voice Actor: Richard Newman
There doesn’t seem to be much information about Race Marshall Budge, besides the fact that he announces the many races and competitions that take place in Dragon City. Budge also seems to wander the Mid-City streets sometimes. He has white hair, is rather overweight, looks elderly and is a poopol. (His height and exact age are unknown.)
Captain Faier
- Voice Actor: Trevor Devall
Captain Faier is the head of Dragon City Security, Dragon City’s main authorities. He takes action whenever the city is threatened and tries to maintain order to the best of his abilities. Faier and Dragon City Security highly respect the Dragon Booster, and any other person with good intentions and a will to protect Dragon City.
Faier has pink hair and brown eyes and wears a blue Dragon City Security uniform. His height and age are unknown. His name seems to have some relation to Ken Faier, who works on the show, or "fair", which tends to be a joke of irony about modern authority.
Armeggaddon
- Voice Actor: Gerard Plunkett
Armeggaddon was from three thousand years ago, and was probably an enemy to the original Dragon Booster. He was imprisoned in the Shadow Track by the original Shadow Booster until Artha, Lance and Moordryd broke the spell that encased riders and dragons inside the track. (See "Faster Than Fear"; a shadowy figure passes by Artha's visor.)
Armeggaddon chooses Moordryd to be "The One" to defeat the Dragon Booster, and presents him with a black draconium amulet, similar to the symbol of the Dragon Eyes. It was believed that he himself is the amulet, since he speaks through it to Moordryd. Armeggaddon is similar to Mortis, since he teaches Moordryd the ancient ways of power.
Armeggaddon was the Emperor or leader of the Black Dragon Eye Empire 3000 years ago and intends to give that honor to his student Moordryd Paynn (Shadow Booster). At first, Armeggaddon was nothing more than shadow, and his fiery, non-human eyes were his only trait. His race was previously unknown. His true form was finally revealed in episode 33, "The Defiants" wearing Dragon armour with long pointed head gear, and large curved spikes coming from his back where he says that he trained Moordryd to use him for himself as a phase for starting his dragon-human war. His mouth is also visible, suggesting he is human. He faces Word Paynn as Drakkus and tells him his love for his son is his weakness. Also, Moordryd betrays Armeggadon when he joins the Dragon Booster. Drakkus, who is actually Word Paynn, and Mortis fought the eight pure black draconium dragons of Armeggadon. After suffering betrayal from the Shadow Booster, Armeggaddon realises his mistake and prepares to resurrect the League of Eight by finding the bonemarks of the eight dragons and start another dragon-human war. He wants to destroy everybody and wants only himself and his dragons to remain alive after the war ends.
Armeggadon, being from 3000 years ago, knows of ALL of the possible Mag Claw moves, including Mag Fury, a Mag Tornado (its real name is unknown), and many others. However, he was beaten by Parmon in episode 36 "Professor Stubborn", when Parm used a combination of gear to redirect his Mag energy back toward him.
Sentrus
The sophisticated and devious Academy scout Sentrus chooses racers for the Elite Racing Academy. She takes an interest in those who show uncanny and astounding skills, not only with racing methods alone, but with the other aspects of racing as well, such as gear choice and advanced knowledge. Sentrus craves highly experienced racers who have proven their spot in the Racing Academy, and at times will bring up challenges to thicken the tension between racers.
Sentrus has white hair and grey eyes, and wears a cyan dress. Her height and age are unknown (though she is rather tall).
Rivet
Rivet is a mechanist, a secretive and highly elusive crew that specialize in powerful grey draconium gear. This group lives by the idea that not all is as it seems, with many shades of gray. He is never seen without his personal invisibility gear, and seems to enjoy creating confusion as seen when he gives Moordryd special grey gear for a race, and then makes it backfire near the finish line. He has directly assisted the Dragon Booster twice, once in a competition, and again when he breaks into the academy.
