List of Eastern Townships

In 1792, the civil administrator of Lower Canada, Alured Clarke, ordered to survey the Crown lands south of the Saint Lawrence River into townships to make room for the Loyalists who had fled the United States. Only about a fifth of these townships were eventually settled by Loyalists. The rest of the surveyand land was settled by successive waves of French, American, Scottish, and Irish immigrants. Today, the historical Eastern Townships make part of four administrative regions of Quebec: Centre-du-Québec, Chaudière-Appalaches, Estrie, and Montérégie.
