Glitter Force, known in Japan as Smile PreCure!, is the ninth installment of the Pretty Cure anime television series produced by Toei Animation. The series follows a group of magical girls who protect Earth from enemies from a fairy tale fantasy world. The original Japanese version aired in TV Asahi in Japan from February 5, 2012 to January 27, 2013 for 48 episodes, replacing Suite PreCure in its initial timeslot, and was succeeded by DokiDoki! PreCure. The opening theme is "Let's go! Smile PreCure!" (Let's go!スマイルプリキュア! Retsu gō! Sumairu Purikyua) by Aya Ikeda. For the first 24 episodes, the ending theme is "Yay! Yay! Yay!" (イェイ!イェイ!イェイ! Yei! Yei! Yei!) by Hitomi Yoshida, whilst the ending theme for episodes 25-48 is "Mankai * Smile!" (満開*スマイル! Mankai*Sumairu!, Full Bloom * Smile!) by Yoshida.[1] All of the songs are composed by Hideaki Takatori. The series was well-received, placing regularly in Japan's weekly top ten anime shows broadcast.
The series was adapted by Saban Brands under the name Glitter Force and was released as a Netflix original series outside of Asia and in multiple languages.[2] This version consists of 40 episodes, the first twenty of which were released on Netflix on December 18, 2015.[3] The dub, which was produced by Studiopolis, features changes to the character's names, terminology, catchphrases, and music.[4][5] The theme song is "Glitter Force", performed by Blush, who also perform the insert songs before the closing credits that use footage of the girls in various computer animated dance sequences.[6][7]
The series was made available in home media. In Japan, a Blu-ray box set by Marvelous AQL and TC Entertainment was released on October 26, 2012, in the same fashion as Suite PreCure.[8] Standard DVD releases were also issued.

On her way to school, a new transfer student named Emily (Miyuki Hoshizora) encounters a pixie named Candy, who leaves behind a pink book. As she struggles to introduce herself, classmate Kelsey (Akane Hino) helps her break the ice. While observing the library, Emily discovers a portal that takes her to magical library known as the Library of Legends. Using the library's warping bookshelves to instantly travel to where Candy is, Emily is confronted by an anthropomorphic wolf named Ulric (Wolfrun), who uses his powers to make the nearby townsfolk fall in despair. As Emily strives to help Candy, she is given a magic compact called a Glitter Pact (Smile Pact), and transforms into the magic warrior Glitter Lucky (Cure Happy). Ulric summons a monster called a Buffoon (Akanbe), but Emily is eventually able to realize her power and defeat it. | |||||

However, Chloe rejects the offer as she is busy with student council activities such as preparing for a Fairy Tale Read-aloud with a neighboring elementary school as the president is absent with a cold. However, during the show, a witch named Brooha (Majorina) crashes the show and creates a Mirror Buffoon that makes clones of itself, causing the girls to waste their power. The gang is visited by Candy's older brother, Pop, who takes them to the library that Emily discovered before. Pop shares the back story of the purpose of the Glitter Force, and presents a Charm Chest (Decor Decor) to house the various charms that have been collected so they can revive their Queen. On April Fools' Day, Lily makes up a lie that she is being transferred to another school the next day. However, Emily takes it seriously and spreads the rumor to the others, with Lily finding herself unable to tell them it was a lie. The lie soon ends up escalating across the whole class, who throw a farewell party for Lily, making it harder for her to tell the truth out of fear of losing her friends. Just then, Brute appears and creates an Roller Buffoon, using lies to throw the girls off guard and bringing Lily's lie to light. After some encouragement from Emily, Lily comes clean about her lie to the relief of the others before defeating the Buffoon. Upon finding a mysterious mallet pertaining to the story of a pin-sized warrior, it turns out to be another invention Brooha lost which Candy inadvertently uses to shrink the girls. Now in miniature size, the girls must navigate giant-sized obstacles to try and recover the mallet from Candy, which proves particularly difficult for April as she has a fear of bugs. However, she becomes less shy around bugs after a group of woodlice help save her life and look after her. As April understands how bugs work together, Brooha finds them, taking negative energy from the bugs and summoning a Dandelion Buffoon. Understanding the need to protect the bugs, April overcomes her fear and manages to defeat the Buffoon with the other girls. As the girls prepare to go on a school trip to Kyoto and Osaka, Candy becomes upset that she is not invited, and although she tries to help out, she only makes their preparation worse. Rascal (Joker), the harlequin villain, gives Ulric, Brute and Brooha special blue noses that make their Buffoons immune to the attacks of the Glitter Force. Candy discovers Ulric but is captured before she can warn the others. Ulric confronts the girls, and his gumball machine Buffoon is able to withstand the Glitter Force's attacks. Candy breaks free and, upon hearing the kind words of her friends, brings forth new Tiara Charms which grant the girls Tiara Forms and a combined attack that defeats the Buffoon. The girls agree to include Candy as past of their team and bring her for their trip. | |||||

As the class arrives in Osaka for the second part of their trip, Emily, Lily, and Candy end up getting separated from Kelsey, April, and Chloe. As Emily and Lily decide to follow the itinerary they got and experience the delights of Osaka, encountering some polite locals (parent chaperones in the English version) along the way, the others end up having to miss most of everything in order to search for them. Just then, Brooha appears and creates a blue-nosed Buffoon from Osaka Tower with Emily and Lily trapped inside. Emily gets upset when her necklace gets chipped in the fight, but her friends remind her that it is the thought that counts and together they defeat the Buffoon. As their class shows little enthusiasm for the sports festival, April nominates herself and the other girls to run for the relay team. Lily does not have much confidence in her running ability, but cheers up when April states she wants to run together with everyone. While the girls prepare for the contests, Lily overhears some other students badmouthing her, she loses her confidence again. As the day of the sports festival comes and Lily still has doubts, Brute appears and summons a blue-nosed Basket Buffoon, soon culminating in a tug of war with the girls. As April sounds out her desire to work as a team, Lily regains her confidence and helps the others defeat the Buffoon. With the relay race finally underway, Lily gets support from the rest of the class and passes the baton. As they each think about it, they read the wishes that Candy had written about them. The girls arrive at the Shadow Realm where they are confronted by Ulric, Brute, Brooha, and Rascal. After making a promise that everyone will return home safely, the girls and Pop fight the villains while Emily heads forth to rescue Candy, coming up against a yellow-nosed Rock Buffoon. Although initially overwhelmed, the girls find faith in their friends, allowing them to overcome their individual opponents. Candy is freed along with the Glitter Charms. Noticing that Euphoria hasn't woken up yet, the girls decide to explore Jubiland. So as to not frighten the inhabitants, Pop transforms the girls into fairies in order to blend in. As Pop tries to figure out the reason why Euphoria hasn't fully revived, the girls meet some of the various inhabitants, who remain friends with them even after the transformation wears off. They soon tell the girls about the Miracle Jewels, said to grant any wish. Meanwhile, Rascal retrieves Nogo, who had been reduced to an egg-like form following his defeat, and gives Ulric a new type of Buffoon Nose, which he uses to create a more powerful Gingerbread House Super Buffoon. As the girls stand to protect the hopes of Jubiland's citizens, they are once again able to summon the Princess Candles and defeat the Super Buffoon, earning two new Glitter Charms. Afterwards, Euphoria contacts the Cures telepathically and explains that, since she used the power from the previous Charms to grant the Glitter Force their Princess Forms, they will need to fill up the Glitter Chest once again in order to revive her. | |||||

As Summer rolls in, Emily heads down to the beach to help out Kelsey's okonomiyaki stand, who is competing against April's shaved ice stand being assisted by Chloe. Even after work is finished, Kelsey and April's fierce rivalry leads them to continue to compete with each other. Just then, Brute arrives and summons a Shaved Ice Super Buffoon, with Kelsey and April's stubbornness causing them to get in each other's way, leading Emily, Lily and Chloe to get captured. Desiring to save their friends, Kelsey and April combine their powers to free the others, allowing them to defeat the Super Buffoon. The girls take Candy with them to experience a summer festival. As they try out the various stands, Brooha also tries them out for herself, though doesn't quite see the fun of it. When Candy goes to check out a stall herself, she ends up being mistaken for a doll and put as a prize on a hoopla stand, requiring the girls to win her back. Just then, Brooha reveals herself and summons a Matsuri Super Buffoon, which the girls then defeat. After the battle, the girls find a viewing spot for the fireworks. | |||||

Emily and the others go to the mountains to visit her grandmother, Tae, who influenced her love of stories with tales of friendly creatures. When asked by Emily why she doesn't just come to live with her, Tae replies that she likes where she is as her 'secret treasure' is here. The next day, Ulric appears but finds he cannot draw negative energy from Tae as she doesn't feel despair at all. Irritated, he summons an Incense Super Buffoon to try and destroy her house. As it launches a fireball headed straight for the house, a mysterious gust of strong wind blows it out, believed to be the aid of the creatures from Tae's stories, giving the girls a chance to defeat the Super Buffoon. | |||||

Noticing that both Emily and April have a fear of ghosts, Kelsey suggests they all have a test of courage at the school to help them get over their fears. Catching onto this, Brooha puts the school under the spell of a Super Buffoon. As Chloe takes everyone on a tour of supposedly haunted spots, Emily and April are confronted by lifelike horrors, although the others don't believe them. Soon, the entire school changes shape, and the girls soon realise this is the work of Brooha. With the entire school possessed by a Super Buffoon, Emily and April are scared left and right, which ends up causing the Super Buffoon to laugh, giving the girls the means to escape. Finding the Buffoon can't actually move, the girls defeat it with ease. Afterwards, the girls remember something much scarier than any ghost; their unfinished summer homework. | |||||

Whilst fretting over their summer homework (with the exception of Chloe,) the girls stumble upon another of Brooha's inventions and get sucked into a game world. Discovering Brooha, Ulric and Brute had also been sucked into the same world, the girls are challenged to a series of games that they must complete in order to escape and finish their homework. First up, Emily goes against Brooha in a game of Whac-A-Mole and, despite facing unfair odds, manages to win. Next up, Kelsey faces Ulric in a go-kart race and manages to win despite Ulric's dirty tactics, followed by Lily managing to beat Brute at bowling. April then wins at baseball whilst Chloe succeeds in swimming. As they finally progress through the other events to the final stage, the girls are tasked with riding a Ferris Wheel Super Buffoon and trying to retain their positive attitude when faced with depressing visions of their lack of studies. Despite the others becoming depressed, Chloe retains her composure and manages to cheer everyone else up by offering to help them study. The girls then defeat the Buffoon and return to the real world, though still have to face the consequences of not finishing their homework on time. | |||||

As the girls wrap up their trip in the Amazon, they are confronted by Brute who brings out a Pirhana Super Buffoon which swallows Candy the Glitter Charms. With the girls struggling underwater, Candy uses the Dolphin Glitter Charm to turn them into mermaids, allowing them to rescue Candy and defeat the Buffoon, earning the final Decors they need. Upon completing the Glitter chest again, a mysterious new clock appears. | |||||

As the girls ponder about the strange clock, which Pop reveals to be the Royal Clock, Rascal completes a new black Buffoon nose that can summon Hyper Buffoons. The Royale Queen appears through the Royal Clock, explaining how it will grant the Glitter Force and Candy a new power. Just then, Ulric appears and uses the black nose, fusing himself to become a Digger Hyper Buffoon. As the girls fight against him, Rascal captures Candy and traps her in the Ball of Neglect, a dreamlike world designed to make her forget about the outside world. The girls attempt to use the Rainbow Burst against Ulric, but find it useless against the power of the black nose. Meanwhile, Candy manages to remember her friends and break free from the dreamworld. Upon seeing the state of the girls, Candy unleashes her emotions, bringing forth a power which activates the Royal Clock and reverts the Hyper Buffoon to a normal Buffoon, allowing Emily to defeat it. Just as the girls celebrate their victory, Rascal captures Kelsey, Lily, April, and Chloe in the Ball of Neglect. | |||||

Unable to bring the others to their senses as well, Emily transforms to try and destroy the Ball of Neglect from the inside, but she is confronted by Rascal who summons a yellow-nosed Rollercoaster Buffoon. As Emily fights desperately against the Buffoon, her unwillingness to give up brings the girls back to their senses. Standing together, the girls break free from the Ball of Neglect and unlock the power of the Royal Clock, defeating the Buffoon with the powered up Royal Rainbow Burst. | |||||

As the girls visit the shooting of a history drama movie, the director becomes interested in and casts them in the movie. Pop, becoming interested as well, transforms into human form and is also cast by the director. Despite the movie going way off script, the director remains enthusiastic with their performance. As the movie continues, Brute interrupts the filming and, upon learning that the monsters in the movie aren't real, becomes a Video Hyper Buffoon, causing trouble for the Cures with its playback features. With help from Candy, the Cures manage to break free of the Hyper Buffoon's control and defeat it. Afterwards, Pop manages to steal the camera's footage and edit it to keep the Cures identities secret, as well as give himself the most screentime. | |||||

As the girls class decides to do a fashion show for the culture festival, one of the boys, Toyoshima, refuses to participate as he feels it is too girly. Wanting everyone to work together, Emily tries to get Toyoshima to join in but he still objects, saying he wanted to do a band performance instead. Emily and the others try convince him but he remains stubborn, which starts to put a damper on the overall mood. As Emily follows after Toyoshima and hears his thoughts on how he wants to have fun with everyone, Brooha appears and becomes a Guitar Hyper Buffoon, using booming music to overwhelm the Cures. Thankfully, Candy manages to use one of the Decors to slip the Buffoon up, giving the Cures a chance to defeat it. Afterwards, Emily manages to get Toyoshima to participate by having his band perform musical accompaniment for the fashion show. | |||||

As Ulric and Brute become Robot Hyper Buffoons, Emily finds she can't actually move on her own, so Lily and the others go inside in order to pilot her. However, none of the girls can seem to figure out how to pilot her properly. Thankfully, Chloe manages to pilot Emily well thanks to a book on robots Lily gave her. Ulric and Brute combine their Buffoon into a more powerful form, but the girls manage to get on even ground thanks to a Glitter Charm. Before they can finish them off, Brooha changes Emily back to normal, but they manage to defeat them using the Royal Rainbow Burst. | |||||

However, Kelsey soon learns that Brian will be returning to England soon, shocking her to the point that she doesn't bother to see him off. As the others confront her as to whether she is alright with that, Ulric appears and becomes a Key Hyper Buffoon. Hearing the support of her friends, Kelsey manages to regain her resolve and fight him off. After the Cures defeat the Buffoon, the girls help Kelsey get to the airport to see Brian off properly. | |||||

Chloe, believing this won't help the school, decides to run for candidacy against them, but has trouble matching up to the promises they are making. On the day of the election, as Chloe struggles to pleade her case, a trip up reveals Brute and Brooha's true forms, forcing them to retreat. With his motives revealed, Ulric becomes a Ballot Box Hyper Buffoon, having an advantage against Chloe due to her confused state. However, Emily and the others manage to encourage Chloe by saying how she taught them the importance of studying. Finally deciding the path she should take, Chloe regains the advantage and helps defeat the Buffoon. Following the battle, Chloe resumes her electoral battle against Ulric, managing to win the favor of the students with her earnest wishes to improve the school. | |||||

Brooha soon arrives and becomes an Acorn Hyper Buffoon, whilst the Glitter Force remain small even after transforming. They manage to tire out the Buffoon with some child-like games, but find their actual attacks are too weak to do anything. Luckily, some infighting between Ulric and Brute causes the girls to be sprayed with the antidote, reverting them to their normal size and allowing them to beat the Buffoon. | |||||

As Emily finds a strange white book in the library, she finds herself getting sucked inside its world and ending up in the role of Cinderella. Pop informs the others that the book is a magical book from Jubiland that determines the contents of all the Cinderella books around the world. As the Shadow Realm commanders appear, with the intent of turning all of the world's Cinderella stories into a bad ending, they, along with the girls and Candy, end up being sucked into the book, winding up in various roles. Brooha, Ulric, and Brute take up the role of the wicked stepmother and stepsisters, hoping to make Emily's life miserable by capturing the Fairy Godmother, Lily, and preventing her from getting Emily to the ball. They are soon aided by some helpful critters, played by Kelsey, April, and Candy, and they soon make their way to the ball, only to be stopped in their tracks by Ulric. However, Emily doesn't give up and with help from Lily, manages to reach the ball to dance with the Prince, played by Chloe. In a last-ditch effort to stop the ending from going as planned, Ulric summons a Buffoon from Emily's glass slipper, leaving Emily alone to defeat it before midnight. With help from Candy, she manages to defeat it in time, allowing the girls to bring the story to its happy ending and return to the real world. | |||||

As Kelsey becomes curious about what the others are doing behind their back, the class is asked to write a report on their personal treasure. While pondering about what her most treasured thing is, Kelsey receives a letter from Brian. Later that night, the girls give Kelsey a handmade good luck charm for her volleyball match, which she appreciates very much, declaring it to be her treasure. The next day, however, Kelsey is confronted by Ulric, who becomes determined to stop her after being giving one more chance by Rascal and transforms into a Volleyball Hyper Buffoon. As Kelsey is overpowered by Ulric's attacks, she falls into despair when he destroys the charm her friends made her. When she hears Ulric plan to target Emily next, however, she regains her resolve to protect her friends and gains a new power to fight back against him, realising her true treasure is her bonds with her friends. Ulric attempts to strike back, but is thwarted by the arrival of the other girls, who manage to defeat him. | |||||

However, Lily soon starts to crack under the pressure of high expectations and feels like it is impossible for her to become a manga artist. Just then, Brute appears before her, using her manga to become a Super Villain Hyper Buffoon. Despite being overwhelmed, Lily puts her faith in her character and her love of drawing and also awakens her new power to fight back Brute, before the others join her to defeat him. With her spark reignited, Lily manages to complete her manga. | |||||

As her mother goes into hospital to deliver her seventh child, April is put in charge of looking after her siblings. As April prepares curry for her family, her younger siblings, Hannah and Hugo, sneak off to find apples for the curry without telling her. As April and the other siblings, Calvin, Harriet and Cody, search for them, Brooha takes advantage of the situation and captures them, trapping them inside an apple cage. As Brooha attempts to attack her family, April has no choice but to transform in front of them in order to protect them. Brooha combines with the apple cage to become an Apple Hyper Buffoon and starts targeting April's siblings, forcing April to take a lot of damage. As her siblings stand up for her, April's desire to protect them awakens her hidden power, allowing her to fight back. Brooha makes a last-ditch attack at the siblings, but the others arrive in time to protect them, free Hannah and Hugo, and defeat Brooha. As the kids believe everything was a dream, April and the others go to the hospital to see her new sister, Yui. | |||||

As the others keep a brave face around Chloe whilst hiding their true feelings from her, Chloe is suddenly confronted by Rascal, who warps her to a hidden dimension and summons a Mirror Hyper Buffoon after her. He further fuels her internal conflict between quitting being a member of the Glitter Force and disappointing her friends by not going overseas, causing her to break down and lose her transformation. As the others arrive and are overwhelmed by the Hyper Buffoon, they confess their true feelings that they don't want Chloe to leave them. Seeing her friends tears, Chloe realises that she doesn't want to leave them either and awakens her hidden power, overcoming Rascal and defeating the Hyper Buffoon. With her resolve affirmed, Chloe turns down the overseas study in order to stay with her friends. | |||||

Whilst going Christmas shopping with the others, Emily has a brief run in with a young girl carrying a small mirror which reminds her of the mirror her grandmother gave her when she was little. Back then, Emily was shy and had trouble making friends and often spent her time playing alone. One day, a peculiar girl began appearing before Emily whenever she felt down, teaching her to smile and helping her be more confident in making new friends, although she never saw the girl again afterwards, believing her to be a fairy of the mirror she had. After telling the others her story, Emily encounters the girl she met before, Yura, who was separated from her mother. As Emily waits with Yura, she is suddenly confronted by Ulric, who has been pushed into a corner following his last failure. Using his last black nose to become a House Hyper Buffoon, Ulric unleashes a barrage of attacks on Emily, but her determination to protect everyone's smiles awakens her hidden power and fights back before the others join her in defeating him. After Yura is reunited with her mother, Emily feels that she has found what truly makes her happy. | |||||

As Nogo's Egg is seen heading towards Earth, the Royale Clock suddenly transforms Candy into a strange gem. Meanwhile, Rascal, who identifies the gem as the Miracle Jewel, reveals to his cohorts that the black noses they have been using have been taking their life force. Realising they have no choice either way, Ulric, Brute and Brooha use the final black nose to transform themselves into super forms, overpowering the Glitter Force with their new power, even proving too powerful for their Princess Forms. The commanders explain how they were mistreated in the fairy tales they came from and joined up with Rascal to bring the world to a bad end in order to ease their suffering. As the girls try to understand their true feelings, Emily's power activates, bringing the commanders into her consciousness where she explains how she's always loved the villains in fairy tales and gives them her thanks. Purified of their negative energy, the commanders are transformed into their original forms, Jubiland fairies named Ururun, Onini and Majorin. Before the girls can claim the final Glitter Charm, Rascal steals it and combines it with negative energy to create evil clones of the girls, the Bad End Glitter Force. | |||||

Rascal traps the girls into separate dimensions to fight against their evil counterparts whilst he targets Pop as he tries to escape with Candy. As Pop questions Rascal on what his motive, he reveals he intends to destroy the Miracle Jewel with Candy inside it, thus destroying all hopes and dreams. Just as Rascal attacks Pop, Euphoria appears from the Royal Clock, where she has been storing the last of her power. She reveals that Candy is her daughter, the Miracle Jewel revealed to be an egg to transform her into the next queen. Rascal soon starts feeding more negative energy to Nogo, turning the world into a desert. However, the girls refuse to give in despair and activate their hidden powers, defeating their clones and retrieving the final Glitter Charm. Just then, Rascal reveals that Nogo has been fully revived before dissolving into a puddle of black ink to complete the process as large giants made of despair appearing all over the place. As Pop places the last Charm into the Glitter Chest, the Miracle Jewel opens forth, awakening Candy in her new form. | |||||

As Candy awakens in her new form, Royal Candy, Euphoria, having expended her energy, disappears, leaving behind the Miracle Jewels to Candy, who is to be the new Queen of Jubiland, along with the Glitter Force Book containing the blank pages of everyone's future. As Candy attempts to suppress the giants, absorbing what was originally Rascal, the resurrected Nogo emerges in his true form and summons an army of dark beings, which continue to revive despite the girls' efforts. Nogo soon overwhelms the girls and splatters black paint on the Glitter Force Book, causing them to sink into a sea of despair. As Candy comes under assault from Nogo as she uses the power of the Miracle Jewels to call out to them, urging them not to give up, she manages to save the girls from losing hope. Nogo attempts to attack Candy after she has exhausted her power, returning to her fairy form, but the Cures stand in to protect her, ascending to their new Ultra Forms. With their new powers, the girls destroy Nogo's army and deal damage to Nogo. However, Nogo soon absorbs all the world's negative energy to transform into a huge dark vortex that threatens to engulf the entire planet. | |||||

The girls attempt to stop Nogo, but their attack fails as he strikes the Earth, undoing their transformation and petrifying their Smile Pacts whilst simultaneously destroying a large chunk of the planet. As Emily and the others scream their desires to protect their futures, their feelings grant the Miracle Jewels enough power to grant one more miracle. However, Pop informs them that if this wish is made, the power of the Mysterious Library will disappear and they will have to separate from Candy, which saddens Emily deeply. As the girls let out their emotions over not wanting to be separated, Candy asks them to think for themselves what is the most important thing to them, assuring them that no matter what happens, they'll always be best friends. Resolving to protect the future, the girls use the power of the Miracle Jewels to transform for the last time, using their combined power to defeat Nogo once and for all and restore the planet. With peace restored, Candy and Pop return to Jubiland, with the girls managing to see them off with a smile before bursting into tears. As the girls return to their everyday lives, Candy eventually finds a way to reunite with Emily and the others. |
