2016 IPL season

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a domestic, annual Twenty20 cricket tournament in India. IPL was established in 2008 and currently consists of eight franchises from eight cities across India. The smartphone manufacturer Vivo Electronics is the current sponsor of IPL 2015-16 season.

There have been a total of thirteen franchises during the eight seasons of IPL. The Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, and the Mumbai Indians are jointly the most successful teams in league history, with both teams each having two titles between them.[3] After these sides, the Rajasthan Royals and the Deccan Chargers are the only other two teams to have won the tournament, both doing so in the first two seasons respectively.[4]

Currently, with eight teams, each team plays each other twice in a home-and-away round-robin tournament.[5] At the conclusion of the league stage, the top four teams qualify for the finals. The top two teams play each other in the first preliminary round match, with the winner going straight to the final while the loser goes on to the second preliminary round. The third and fourth place teams play each other to decide who will take on the loser from the first preliminary round match.[5] The winner of the second preliminary round match will move onto the final where the winner will be crowned the Indian Premier League champions.[5]

Out of the eleven teams that have played in IPL, three have won it twice, while two have one it once each. The Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Mumbai Indians are the most successful teams in league's history.[3] The other two teams who have won the tournament are the Deccan Chargers and Rajasthan Royals.[4] The Super Kings are the only team to have won the tournament and then defended it the next season, winning in 2010 and winning again in 2011.[3]
