List of Sikh soldiers

Sikh (/ˈsk/ or /ˈsɪk/; Punjabi: ਸਿੱਖ, sikkh IPA: [ˈsɪkkʰ]) is the title and name given to an adherent of Sikhism. The term has its origin in the Sanskrit term śiṣya, meaning "disciple, learner" or śikṣa, meaning "instruction".

Note: Cross of St. George was Imperial Russia's highest exclusively military award for gallantry in battlefield. Its status was same as British Victoria Cross and post-independence Param Vir Chakra [1]

The contingent of the twenty one Sikhs was led by Havildar Ishar Singh, and all chose to fight to the death instead of surrendering. In recognition of their supreme sacrifice, the British Parliament rose to pay them respect, and each one of them was awarded the Indian Order of Merit.IOM was the highest Gallantry award for the Indian soldier until the First World War, when they became eligible for the VC.
