The First Family is an American syndicated sitcom that premiered on September 22, 2012. The series follows the 45th President of the United States William Johnson (Christopher B. Duncan), who tries to handle his duties as the leader of the United States and as a family man to his wife Katherine (Kellita Smith) and their four children, while also having to deal with the escapades of his bickering sister-in-law Pauletta (Jackée Harry) and father Alvin (John Witherspoon). As the newly elected President of the United States, William Johnson (Christopher B. Duncan) tries to balance being the leader of the Free World and being a husband and father of four kids. William also has to deal with his wife Katherine's outspoken sister Pauletta (Jackée Harry), who's constantly putting him down and doesn't get along with William's father Alvin (John Witherspoon). In the first episode, the leader of a foreign country (Paul Rodriguez) stops by to have dinner at the White House in order to discuss preventing a war between his country and the U.S., this occurring at the same that William is trying to teach his kids that fighting is not the answer to one's problems. Meanwhile, William makes plans for his and Katherine's (Kellita Smith) 20th wedding anniversary, but Katherine and both their families have surprise plans of their own for the occasion. | ||||||

The kids' report cards are in and Charles gets five "C"'s on his report card, while Chloe tries to hide the fact that she received what she thinks is a terrible grade (a "B" in history) on hers, leading William and Katherine to break into Chloe's bedroom to find out what grades their eldest daughter got. William stresses out when the latest presidential approval ratings reveal that the public thinks that he lacks likeability, something that is the complete opposite situation in how people perceive Katherine as the First Lady. Meanwhile, Pauletta needs a dance partner for an audition tape in the hopes of appearing on a reality dance show and Alvin is her last hope. | ||||||

Pauletta asks for William's help to prevent the post office branch that she's employed at from closing, but when the postmaster general informs William that nothing can be done to keep the branch from closure, a disgruntled Pauletta decides to go on strike and shirk her responsibilities as the nanny for William's kids. Meanwhile, Katherine tries to make the perfect snickerdoodles to showcase for a magazine interview and makes one bad batch after another. | ||||||

President Johnson winds up in the doghouse with his daughter Chloe, after he accidentally outs the identity of a boy she has a crush on to her entire class during his appearance at her school's career day and ends up throwing Katherine under the bus when he reveals that she was the one who told him about the boy. Meanwhile, when Bernard brings up an old case of Billy Beer from the White House basement, it sparks ideas in Alvin and Pauletta to cash in on their familial links to the president by marketing their own product like Billy Carter did, leading them to try and sell Grandma Eddy's homemade elbow cream. | ||||||

The adults conduct a practice roast to help President Johnson prepare for the upcoming White House Correspondents' Dinner. While it starts out all in good fun, Pauletta takes things in another direction when her jokes about how Katherine has become boring since she got married lead to Pauletta revealing her grudge over lost ambitions of being in a singing duo with her sister called The Almost Twins. Meanwhile as the practice roast is going on, Charles and Chloe are in charge of babysitting Lucas and Olivia, who end up getting frightened from watching a horror movie. | ||||||

Rumors abound the Johnson presidency as Katherine is the subject of one that suggests she spends $500 just to get her hair done (in truth, she spends $400). Pauletta sets up an appointment with her hairstylist Keisha to give her sister a makeover – leading to wild and unexpected results when the end result leaves Katherine with an outrageous hairstyle in the shape of the Statue of Liberty (that also happens to play patriotic music and shoots confetti), leaving Pauletta to have to undo the damage. Meanwhile, following his being the center of a false death rumor and discovering that his obituary in the newspaper is only one sentence long, Alvin sets out to make a name for himself by trying to accomplish setting a world record. Kel Mitchell has a cameo as a Beauty Shop attendant. | ||||||

During Katherine's first press conference as first lady on a new government music program for inner-city children, President Johnson stretches the truth about their children's musical abilities, and announces that they will be performing a recital. This leads to Katherine recruiting her mother (and childhood music teacher) Eddy (Marla Gibbs) to help them, only to turn practice into a boot camp experience. When her method fails and the kids start playing badly at the recital, Carolyn (Gladys Knight) saves her son and daughter-in-law from admitting the truth by having the children sing a rousing rendition of This Little Light of Mine with her. Meanwhile, Alvin and Pauletta concoct a scheme to capitalize on family canine Maxine's popularity, by finding a male dog to breed with her. | ||||||

The two then decide to figure out how to act with more decorum and get Bernard to teach them lessons in etiquette. Meanwhile, Charles is upset about called bland in a rap song referencing the Presidential family, so he decides to hire a "swagger coach" (Kel Mitchell) to help him become cool. Pauletta, Alvin and Charles' new personalities prove interesting during dinner with a foreign diplomat that President Johnson is trying to strike a peace treaty with. | ||||||

Alvin's old Army buddy Clayton (Clifton Davis) visits the White House, and Pauletta starts dating the recently widowed man, much to Alvin's chagrin. However, Clayton confides in Alvin that he is actually romantically interested in someone else – Alvin's wife Carolyn (Gladys Knight). Meanwhile although he lacks the skills to do the job right, Lucas aspires to be a butler like Bernard; the President and Katherine have their youngest son serve dinner for the family – and are surprised to discover that Lucas may be an excellent servant after all. | ||||||

When Charles announces his decision to run for class secretary of his school, President Johnson tries to convince him to run for student council president instead, only for the President to take over Charles' campaign and have him run for the presidential position (just like President Johnson ran when he was Charles' age), even going as far as using his campaign staff to come up with campaign strategies. Alvin and Pauletta come to Charles' rescue to help him derail his chances of winning. When Charles' only opposition for secretary announces she is dropping out of the race, he decides to forfeit the race instead, realizing that Summer will make a far better class secretary than him. Meanwhile, Katherine is given a necklace (which is held together by a coathanger) made by Olivia, a headband made by Lucas and an equally gaudy belt made by both of the youngest Johnson children, putting Katherine in a bind when she promies to wear the handmade accessories to an important gala event. | ||||||

The President and Katherine are called to Olivia's school, when she gets involved in a fight with another student, who happens to be the daughter of corporate executive Lawrence Anderson (Robert Curtis Brown), The President's archrival. Anderson goes on television to challenge the President to a ping-pong game, with a $5 million charity donation on the line, but the President, trying to remain calm and presidential (though bottling up his anger only causes him to crush things with his bare hands), refuses to accept the challenge until Anderson calls out Olivia as a bully on TV. Meanwhile, Chloe's friend Megan flies in from Detroit to visit Chloe and develops a crush on Charles; Charles and a made-over Megan are caught in a compromising position by Chloe when her friend lays a kiss on him, but Chloe soon discovers that Megan is using her brother just to become famous. | ||||||

Chloe tutors star high school basketball player Brad Hudson, but both Chloe and Charles later discover that they're being used by Brad after he asks Chloe to do his book report for him and asks Charles to substitute for him at his volunteer job at the animal shelter. Meanwhile, President Johnson twists his ankle on the Oval Office doorway (the fault of his Secret Service agents after they try to carry him out during a silly string attack while playing with Lucas and Olivia), but Agent Hardison (Lee Reherman) and Agent Hill's (John Eric Bentley) attempts to help the President in his condition only cause him more harm. After Hardison and Hill decide to tender their resignations, President Johnson sets up a situation in which Hardison and Hill can get him out of harm's way to convince them that they are worthy of the job. | ||||||

After the outfit of an Ireland cultural minister jars him during a meeting, the President sees a psychiatrist named Dr. Hayes (George Wyner) who brings up old memories of a doll named Mikey that he had 30 years ago as a child, whom Alvin convinced his son to give up by claiming that Mikey would come alive and eat his nose, eventually leaving Alvin to wonder if he had emotionally scarred his son. Meanwhile, Charles and Chloe have a hard time breaking the news that Lucas's pet turtle Tommy has died, though Olivia ends up breaking it to her brother bluntly. Pauletta is disappointed about being left out of a family photo being taken for a magazine, causing her to seek Dr. Hayes's help when she feels out of place in the family. | ||||||

Katherine insists that she and the President should have a date night, because they don't have enough time for romance between the kids, presidential duties and the Secret Service. Bernard tips off the President about a French restaurant that can be accessible from the White House through a secret tunnel, requiring them to wear disguises in order to remain inconspicous. The two get lost on the way to the restaurant, and stumble upon an emergency bunker that they get locked inside. At home, Pauletta and Alvin find a way to make some quick cash by helping single people find mates at a speed dating event in the White House, where Vice President Crandall (Tom Arnold) – who happens to be in disguise – ends up boring his potential mates, though his cover is blown when Agents Hardison and Hill ask him to help in the search for President Johnson when he is reported missing. | ||||||

Pauletta and Alvin serve as very unreliable narrators in a Rashomon-style recounting of the story of the President and Katherine's wedding twenty years earlier. Both tell how the family how they "remember" the events surrounding the nuptials, blaming one another for the accidental destruction of Katherine's wedding dress before the ceremony and painting the other in an unsavory light. Eddy ultimately steps in to tell the real story of the events leading up to the dress being set ablaze by an iron, doused with ashes (instead of water) and being stained by the cake. | ||||||

Charles narrowly passes his written driver's exam, and wants someone to teach him to drive in order to get his driver's license. As the President laments missing out on his children's important milestones because of work and considers teaching his son how to drive, Katherine, Pauletta, Alvin, Eddy and Bernard each end up serving as Charles's driving instructors – much to Charles's frustration. When Charles gets into an accident (with an clown-shaped speaker box at a restaurant's drive-thru), the President helps Charles face his fear of driving. Meanwhile, a group (Debra Wilson, Harvey Guillen and Paul Tigue) from an organization of conspiracy theorists and believers in the paranormal comes to the White House – who believe Pauletta is an alien queen from the planet Zygon. | ||||||

President Johnson is asked to throw the ceremonial first pitch at a Major League Baseball game, but his pitching skills are sorely lacking, both in real life and while playing a video game with his sons. Katherine arranges to have baseball hall-of-famer C.J. Patton (Kristoff St. John) help the President train for pitching at the game, only to find out that C.J. and Katherine used to date. In order to allay the President's jealousy, Katherine invites C.J. and his wife Allison (Lon'ye Perrine) to dinner, only for the both of them to discover that Allison (whom C.J. nicknames "Kat" and "First Lady") looks just like Katherine. The President discovers that Olivia that can pitch better than the pro players, leading him to have her sub for him at the game. Meanwhile, when Pauletta helps nurse Bernard's concussion, the two accidentally have a romantic moment. | ||||||

Bernard's son Reginald (Reggie Hayes) visits the White House and decides to quit being a butler (much to Bernard's dismay) to become a magician after President Johnson says that people should chase their passions in life, but Reginald turns out to be a terrible magician when he performs for the Johnson family and Bernard. However, Olivia reveals that Lucas had taken the animals that were supposed to be used in Reginald's act. Meanwhile, Pauletta and Alvin get on the bad side of some animal rights activists protesting outside the White House after they enter eating hamburgers, only for Pauletta to (pretend to) become a vegetarian after a confrontation with the activists leads to her falling for one of the group's members, Warren (Warren Hutcherson). Note: Michael D. Roberts (Bernard) is upgraded to a series regular beginning with this episode. | ||||||

During a photo op at a chicken restaurant, President Johnson's gray hair has him mistaken for much older than he is by the restaurant's cashier. Katherine also starts to feel insecure about getting older. During a meeting in which President Johnson meets with three senior citizens complaining about being stereotyped, the President loses an arm wrestling match to an 84-year-old man. The President then heeds his dad Alvin's advice to embrace getting older. Meanwhile, Pauletta and Eddy go on a double date with a man named George and his younger son Matthew, only to discover the much older George is the one she's going out with. | ||||||

Pauletta and Alvin win $5,000 in the lottery, but they end up in a dispute over the use of the winning numbers. Rather than settling their dispute in private as President Johnson suggests, the two decide to take their feud to the TV court show Court of the People. But when Alvin brings Olivia in as a surprise witness, she reveals that she gave them the two dollars to purchase the winning ticket, leading the show's presiding judge, Judge Pepper (Dorien Wilson), to award the $5,000 to the President's youngest daughter. Meanwhile, Katherine decides to redecorate the White House, but the new look leaves much to be desired, leading Katherine to challenge President Johnson to see if he can do better. | ||||||

When President Johnson unveils his campaign about healthy eating, he gets Vice President Crandall (Tom Arnold) to support the cause and start living a healthier lifestyle. But Crandall ends up getting caught by a paparazzi getting wings from a chicken joint, leading to him and the President disagreeing on whether the government should be telling people how to live their lifestyle. Vice President Crandall's "Eats What I Wants" campaign gains popularity with the public, but he is forced to change his eating habits after he suffers an acid reflux attack. Meanwhile, after Katherine objects to a tight dress she wants to wear to the dance, Chloe asks Pauletta to chaperone her school dance, even though Katherine had already been asked to do it first; however, Chloe's belief that Pauletta is cooler than Katherine goes by the wayside when her aunt objects to another revealing dress. | ||||||

For the fourth time, Charles loses a cell phone; but the President and Katherine refuse to buy him a new one, and suggest he get a job and earn the money for a new phone himself. He ends up getting a part-time job at local chicken joint Wing Kings. But when Charles stands up for a co-worker who gets grief from a mean customer over a bad order, he ends up getting fired from the restaurant, causing Pauletta to help her nephew by using her position as the Wing Kings Queen to convince his boss to get Charles his job back. Meanwhile, President Johnson scrambles to find his wedding ring before Katherine finds out that he lost it, but the press catches wind of his missing ring, leading the couple to do damage control. | ||||||

President Johnson meets with the supreme leader of a country that has been cut off from civilization for 50 years to strike a new trade agreement; dressed up as his favorite celebrity Elvis Presley, June Jr. (Marcus Choi) is shocked to discover that Elvis died (not realizing that he died in 1977). June says he will agree to the trade agreement on the pretense that President Johnson throw a state dinner and invite celebrities (all of whom are deceased, such as Marlon Brando, Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable) to the bash, leading him to hire celebrity lookalikes. The situation gets complicated when June believes that President Johnson's press secretary Rebecca (Mary Passeri) is Lucille Ball and proposes marriage. Meanwhile, Olivia is given a good luck idol, but she and Charles discover that it is truly good luck, even resulting in Metta World Peace visiting the White House. But problems arise when the two kids break the idol. Pauletta falls for June's consulate Cho (George Cheung). Note: Yara Shahidi (Chloe Johnson) and Sayeed Sahidi (Lucas Johnson) are no longer credited as series regulars. | ||||||

Pauletta reunites with Melanie (Robin Givens), a rival of hers from the Little Miss Motor City pageant, and furthers the rivalry by entering Olivia into the Little Miss Smile Brite D.C. pageant in which Melanie's own daughter Destiny (Sade Kimora Young) is a contestant; Katherine finds out about the plan, and ultimately becomes one of Olivia's pageant coaches. Before the pageant, Katherine reveals that she is responsible for sabotaging Pauletta's chances of winning the Little Miss Motor City pageant by putting itching powder in her dress, something Pauletta believed that Melanie had done; Olivia improvises a comedy routine for the talent portion of the pageant, after Destiny sings the song Olivia planned to sing (Give My Regards to Broadway). Meawnhile, President Johnson becomes the joke of the nation – and the butt of jokes from late night talk show host Johnny Griffin (series creator Byron Allen) – after he gets startled by a spider during a live presidential address. The President tries to prive that he isn't afraid of spiders when appearing on The Johnny Griffin Show. | ||||||

Vice President Crandall (Tom Arnold) stays at The White House when his apartment is being fumigated for termites, and becomes a nuisance for the Johnson family. When he barges into a meeting, Crandall falls in love with press secretary Rebecca (Mary Passeri). Days later, Katherine discovers that Crandall's house finished fumigating two days earlier, giving them leeway to get him out; however, the President, Katherine and Bernard discover that Crandall extended his stay to get closer to Rebecca. Alvin decides to help Vice President Crandall court Rebecca, which fails miserably when he repeats everything Alvin says, including accidentally saying a comment aimed at Charles regarding his facial hair. Crandall then seeks President Johnson's advice and sets up a situation to make him look like a hero to Rebecca by rescuing one of her 17 cats. |
