List of U.S. colonial possessions
The United States has from time to time in its history had several territories under its control in the same fashion as a colonial possession.
Ignoring areas that have now become states in the U.S., and those areas that due to warfare were held under temporary U.S. military command, these territories include:-

- Liberia (1821–1847) - Liberia was never officially colonized or claimed directly by the United States. It was founded by the ACS (American Colonization Society), a private American civilian organization.
