Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez (born February 3, 1977), known by his stage name Daddy Yankee, is a Puerto Rican reggaeton singer, rapper, songwriter, producer and actor. Ayala was born in Río Piedras, San Juan, Puerto Rico, and was raised in the neighborhood of Villa Kennedy Housing Projects.[1] He is one of the most important reggaeton exponents in the world alongside Wisin & Yandel, Don Omar and the retired Hector El Father.
Ayala aspired to be a professional baseball player, and tried out for the Seattle Mariners Major League baseball team. Before he could be officially signed, he was hit by a stray round from an AK-47 rifle while taking a break from a studio recording session with reggaeton mix tape icon DJ Playero circa 1992. He spent roughly one and a half years recovering from the wound; the bullet was never removed from his hip, and he credits the shooting incident with allowing him to focus entirely on a music career. That incident is the central theme of his songs «Coraza Divina» (2007) and «6 De Enero» (2012).[1]
He played a very important part in reggaeton's international success through his single «Gasolina» and his album Barrio Fino, which was the first reggaeton album to achieve a standart platinum certification by the RIAA for 1,000,000 copies sold in the United States.[2] Barrio Fino and Barrio Fino En Directo were part of the three best selling Latin albums in the US during the 2000s decade. He released 7 studio albums, a compilation album, 2 mixtapes, 2 live albums and a soundtrack as of 2013. Since 2007, he holds a reggaeton record for most copies sold in the US during the first week of its release with his album El Cartel: The Big Boss. His 2013 album King Daddy was the first only-digital Latin album to reach the top 10 in Billboard charts. He has sold over 18 million albums worldwide during his 25-year-long career.[3] Currently he is working on his next studio album, titled King Daddy 2, scheduled to be released during 2016.
He has also a small film career, leading the 2004's short film El Cangri, making a cameo appearance in Vampires (2005), and having a lead role in the 2007's docummentary film Straight Outta Puerto Rico and his own film Talento De Barrio (2008), which soundtrack achieved a double Latin platinum certification for 200,000 copies sold in the US. The movie earned more than 2 million dollars from the box office as of September 2008.[4] Ayala also made other appearances in TV series, including 6 episodes as guest in the US 27 years-long soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful in 2010, and is also one of the three coaches in La Voz Kids during the show's third and upcoming fourth season.
As to awards and nominations, Daddy Yankee is the reggaeton most awarded artist and also the most nominated. Between 2005 and 2015, he won 52 awards and lost 138 times. His first award was a 2005 Lo Nuestro Award for Urban Album of the Year, and his last one was a 2015 Latin American Music Award for Favourite Urban Song. Mixing both winning and losses, Ayala was nominated a total of 190 times since his raise to international fame in 2004.

ALMA Awards
The American Latino Media Arts Award (or ALMA Award) is an award created in 1995, which highlights the best American Latino contributions to music, television, and film. The awards promote fair and accurate portrayals of Latinos. Daddy Yankee won his only nomination in the 2006's edition in the Outstanding Male Musical Performer category.[5]

The American Music Awards (or AMAs) is an annual American music awards show, created by Dick Clark in 1973 for ABC when the network's contract to present the Grammy Awards expired. Unlike the Grammys, which are awarded on the basis of votes by members of the Recording Academy, the AMAs are determined by a poll of the public and fans, who can vote through the AMAs website. Daddy Yankee was nominated 4 times between 2005 and 2010, lossing always in the Favorite Latin Artist category: thrice with Shakira[6][7][8] and once with Jennifer Lopez.[9]

The Billboard Music Award is an honor given by Billboard, a publication and music popularity chart covering the music business. The Billboard Music Awards show had been held annually since 1989 in December until it went dormant in 2007. The awards returned in 2011 and is held annually in May. Daddy Yankee was nominated only once; it was in the 2014's edition with his single «Limbo», which lost to Marc Anthony's «Vivir Mi Vida» in the Top Latin Song category.[10]

The International Dance Music Awards (or IDMA) is a major event in the Winter Music Conference (WMC), a weeklong electronic music conference, held every March since 1985 in Miami Beach, Florida, United States. Latin Grammy Awards
A Latin Grammy Award is an award created in 2000 by The Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences to recognize outstanding achievement in the Latin music industry. The Latin Grammy honors works produced anywhere around the world that were recorded in either Spanish or Portuguese and is awarded in the United States. Both the regular Grammy Award and the Latin Grammy Award have similar nominating and voting processes, in which the selections are decided by peers within the Latin music industry. Daddy Yankee was the first reggaeton artist to be nominated in the Record of the Year category with his single «Gasolina», but lost to Alejandro Sanz' «Tu No Tienes Alma». The MTV Video Music Awards Japan are the Japanese version of the MTV Video Music Awards. Like the MTV Video Music Awards in the United States, in this event artists are awarded for their songs and videos through online voting from the same channel viewers. Initially Japan was part of the MTV Asia Awards, which included all Asian countries, but because of the musical variety existent in Japan, in May 2002 began to hold their own awards independently. Orgullosamente Latino Awards
The Orgullosamente Latino Awards were accolades created in 2004 for the best in Latin music given to albums with previously unreleased material, inside the January 1 and December 31 dates of each year. They were created by Alexis Núñes Oliva, executive producer of Ritmoson Latino, the Mexico-based music television channel through which the awards were broadcast each year until it's cancellation in 2010 in honor to the awards sculptor's death. The Premios Tu Mundo (Spanish for "Your World Awards") is an annual award presented by American television network Telemundo since 2012. The awards celebrates the achievements of Hispanics and Latinos in the media including TV shows, movies, music, fashion, and sports. Daddy Yankee won 4 out of 5 nominations, losing only to «Damaso» by Gerardo Ortíz in the Best Party Starter Song category.

Tecla Awards
The Tecla Awards is a national awards program created in 2015 and presented by Telemundo that honors and highlights the achievements of top Latino and multicultural content creators. Daddy Yankee was nominated only once in the ceremony's second edition, losing to his compatriot Yandel on the Best Musician/Band/Group on Social Media category.[51]

World Music Awards
The World Music Awards is an international awards show founded in 1989 under the high patronage of Albert II, Prince of Monaco and is based in Monte-Carlo. Awards are presented to the world's best-selling artists in the various categories and to the best-selling artists from each major territory. Sales figures are provided by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI). Daddy Yankee was nominated only once; it was in the 2006's edition and lost to Shakira in the Best Selling Latin Artist category.[52] He is the only reggaeton artist to be nominated at this awards.

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) is an American not-for-profit performance-rights organization (PRO) that protects its members' musical copyrights by monitoring public performances of their music, whether via a broadcast or live performance, and compensating them accordingly. ASCAP honors its top members in a series of annual awards shows in seven different music categories: pop, rhythm and soul, film and television, Latin, country, Christian, and concert music.

Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) is one of three United States performing rights organizations, along with ASCAP and SESAC. It collects license fees on behalf of songwriters, composers, and music publishers and distributes them as royalties to those members whose works have been performed. BMI annually hosts award shows that honor the songwriters, composers and music publishers of the year's most-performed songs in the BMI catalogue. Viña del Mar International Song Festival
The Viña del Mar International Song Festival (Spanish: Festival Internacional de la Canción de Viña del Mar) is a music festival that is considered the best and biggest in Latin America and the most important musical event in the Americas which is held annually on the 3rd week of February since 1960 in Viña del Mar, Chile. The Festival takes place in the amphitheatre of Quinta Vergara. The Viña festival features a song competition on two categories (pop music song and folk song), interspersed with performances by international music stars from around the world, encompassing such diverse genres as rock, pop music in various languages, merengue, salsa, reggaetón, bachata and others. Daddy Yankee performed in 2006, 2009 and 2013, winning all possible recognitions in the last year, which was also a sold-out concert.[53]
