List of bishops of Macau
Portuguese Jesuit priest Melchior Miguel Carniero Leitão was appointed as Titular Bishop of Nicaea on January 23, 1555 and serviced Macau; Pope Gregory XIII issued an edict for the establishment of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Macau on January 26, 1576, and he was appointed as the first bishop of Macau and he served Macau till 1581. The current bishop of Macau is Stephen Lee Bun-sang.
Until now, there is no bishop appointed as archbishop or cardinal. However, Eugénio de Trigueiros and José da Costa Nunes were appointed as archbishop with the re-designation by the Pope.[1]
Symbol
All Catholic bishops are appointed by the Pope, and are considered as the messenger with the succession of apostolic under the definition in the Catechism of the Catholic Church;[2][3] and as same as bishops of Macau.
Responsibilities
The bishop of Macau whom is appointed as the spokesman of the Pope.[2] He is the leader of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Macau under the division of jobs on behalf of the Pope, and he is responsible for the pastoral and charitable works within the Diocese.[1]。
For the jurisdiction for the responsibilities of bishop of Macau includes China, Japan, Hong Kong, Korean Peninsula and neighbouring areas; however, with the development and the needs for the pastoral works, Vatican established more than 600 Roman Catholic dioceses after the establishment of the Diocese of Macau. For now, the jurisdiction for the Diocese is within Macau Peninsula, Taipa and Coloane where there are six parishes and three quasi-parishes.[1]
