List of largest art museums in the world

The State Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg, Russia
The Louvre, Paris, France
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, United States
The National Museum of China, Beijing, China
Vatican Museums, Vatican City

This list of largest art museums in the world ranks art museums and other museums that contain mostly pieces of art by the best available estimates of total exhibition space.

Methodology

Only gallery space is to be considered, not be confused with the total space inside the building (which is generally twice as large).

The museum should be mainly composed of human made artifacts with an important aesthetical dimension (i.e. natural history, social history, science and technology museums are to be excluded, as well as palaces whose purpose is primarily historical and architectural and secondarily as an art collection).

Museums contained inside a bigger institution cannot be considered as one entity if they are not at the same location.

For purposes of this list, large museums are those with more than 8,000 m2 (86,000 sq ft) of gallery space.

Dimensions of building in feet established from satellite view of museum building from Google Maps. Total square footage of gallery spaces then calculated based on dimensions of gallery spaces in floor plan.
  2. Floor space is 45,000 square meters, British galleries space is 3,000 square meters. Made an estimation of gallery space based on those numbers compared to map.
  3. Gallery spaces occupy about 3/5 of 24,619 square meters Sabatini building, and expansion added 2,251 square meters of gallery space.
