Lodovico Pavoni (11 September 1784 – 1 April 1849) was an Italian Roman Catholic priest who administered in Brescia where he lived. He paid close attention to the needs of males and was concerned with their education. He was to establish - in 1825 - his own religious congregation to assist in his mission: the Sons of Mary Immaculate which came to be known also as the "Pavoniani".[1]

Pavoni was beatified on 14 April 2002 and is the patron of his order. The second miracle needed for his sainthood is now under investigation.

Life

Lodovico Pavoni was born in Brescia on 11 September 1794. He received his theological formation at the home of Father Carlo Domenico Ferrari - future Bishop of Brescia. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1807.

He was appointed as an assistant to Bishop Gabrio Nava in 1812 and was named as a church rector in 1818. He was assigned to the Church of St. Barnabas.

He opened a center for males and expanded it into a hostel in 1821 for their shelter and to include a school to teach them a particular trade which included carpentry, silversmiths, blacksmiths, shoemakers and dye making. He extended this to deaf and mute people in 1823. He founded his own congregation of priests and brothers in 1825 known as the Sons of Mary Immaculate, commonly referred to as the "Pavonians". Pope Gregory XVI granted his assent to the congregation in 1843. On 8 December 1847, Lodovico and the first members made their religious profession.

In 1849 Pavoni did his best to assist citizens who were in the middle of a cholera epidemic. With Austria and Brescia in conflict, he died in mid 1849 as the city burned.[2][1][3]

Sainthood process

Process and beatification

Pope Benedict XV commenced the beatification cause on 12 March 1919 despite the fact that it had conducted its business on a local level from 1908 to 1912. Despite this it was ratified on two occasions in 1926 and in 1942. Pope Pius XII declared that he had lived a life of heroic virtue and declared him to be Venerable.

A miracle attributed to his intercession was investigated from 1925 to 1926 and was ratified decades later in 2001. Pope John Paul II approved the miracle in 2001 and beatified Pavoni on 14 April 2002.

Second miracle

The second miracle required for his eventual canonization was investigated in the diocese where the healing occurred and the Congregation for the Causes of Saints decreed that the process was valid and would begin their own investigation on 12 December 2014.

Postulation

Father Pietro Riva is the current postulator of the cause.
