Louisiana Lightning

Louisiana Lightning is an un-aged American whiskey, which is distilled in Louisiana. It is one of the only distilleries in the state of Louisiana to open since the American Prohibition. Lionel Dufour and his son, Matt Dufour, established the distillery in 2011.

The whiskey won a silver medal at the Los Angeles International Spirits Competition and a bronze at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Company history

Lionel Dufour founded Louisiana Lightning in 2011 and its distillery is based in Amite City, Louisiana. It is distilled in South Louisiana, an area that is traditionally known for its production of rum.[1] Known by its full name Louisiana Lightning Clear Sour Mash Whiskey, it was first released in 2013 as an un-aged whiskey.[2] Co-founder Matt Dufour stated in an interview that at the time of the whiskeys launch, that there were "no Louisiana-made whiskey on the market." The distillery sold 1,000 cases during its first year on the market. It is also one of the only whiskeys to be produced in Louisiana since the Prohibition.[3]

According to The Times-Picayune, it was the first of three major whiskeys to be distilled in the state, with LA 1 Whiskey and Riz Louisiana Rice Whiskey following shortly after in 2014.[4] The three whiskeys were described by The Times-Picayune as a whiskey renaissance for the state of Louisiana.[5]

Production

The un-aged corn-grain whiskey is rated as 80-proof and was first released in 2013.[3] Tastings.com described the whiskey as, "clear. Aromas of roasted corn cob, molasses and burnt sugar with a soft, dryish light-to-medium body and powdered sugar, dried citrus, mineral and white pepper snap on the finish. A lively white whiskey for cocktails."[6]

Recognition

In 2014, Louisiana Lightning won a gold medal at the Artisan Spirit Awards.[7] during the same year, it also won a gold medal at the Denver International Spirits Competition.[8] During the same year, it also won a bronze medal at the Texas International Spirits Competition, silver medal at the Los Angeles International Spirits Competition and bronze medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2014.[9]

Proof 66 gave the whiskey a 390/891 rating,[10] while UnderTheLabel gave the whiskey a rating of 68%.[11] Tastings.com gave it 87 points out of 100.[6]
