Luke Matthew Daniels (born 5 January 1988) is an English footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Scunthorpe United.

Career

Born in Bolton, Greater Manchester, Daniels joined West Bromwich Albion in 2004 after being released by Manchester United. His good form saw him make his international debut for England Under-18s in their 2–1 win over Slovenia in April 2006.

Daniels spent seven years at Old Trafford before being offered a trial at West Brom. Daniels was an unused substitute in the 2007 Championship play-off Final.[1]

Motherwell (loan)

He joined Scottish Premier League side Motherwell on loan for the rest of the 2007–08 season on 25 January 2008,[2] making his debut against Celtic on 3 May.

Shrewsbury Town (loan)

After returning to West Brom for the summer, he joined Shrewsbury Town on a season loan on 1 August.[3] He shone in Shrewsbury's playoff semi final, second leg against Bury at Gigg Lane. His "man of the match" display ensured Shrewsbury a place in the League Two play-off final at Wembley.[4] Daniels was the BBC Sport Player Rater man of the match in the final after making several saves, but Shrewsbury still lost 1–0 to Gillingham.[5]

Tranmere Rovers (loan)

After signing a new two-year contract at Albion, Daniels joined Tranmere Rovers on loan for the 2009–10 season.[6]

Bristol Rovers (loan)

On 14 July, it was officially confirmed by Bristol Rovers that Daniels had signed a season-long loan deal after keeping his identity secret for nearly a week.[7] Unfortunately, after sustaining a back injury during pre-season, his loan spell was terminated and he returned to the Hawthorns.[8]

Loans to Charlton Athletic and Rochdale

On 17 September, Daniels joined Charlton Athletic on a 28-day loan after Robert Elliot suffered an elbow injury that was expected to keep him out for about a month. After his brief spell at The Valley he returned to West Brom before being sent out on loan again on 2 December, this time to Rochdale on an emergency loan after they had lost both their goalkeepers to injury.

Bristol Rovers (second loan)

On 5 January 2011, Daniels joined Bristol Rovers on loan until 31 May 2011,[9] and went straight in as first-choice 'keeper replacing Mikkel Andersen who had returned to Reading after his loan spell. Daniels made his Rovers debut in the home draw with fellow League One strugglers Walsall. The move turned sour for Daniels however when he aggravated an old back injury in the warm-up before facing his parent club in a pre-season friendly, leaving him unable to play for several months and leading to his loan deal being cancelled before the start of the season. He played just one game for Rovers during this spell; a friendly at Partick Thistle

Southend United

On 25 October 2011, Daniels was signed on a one-month loan deal by Southend United to deputise for their first-choice goalkeeper Glenn Morris, who was ruled out for four weeks with thigh strain.[10] The loan period, which had been due to expire on 26 November was extended by a month, enabling Daniels to play in Southend's FA Cup campaign.

Return to West Brom

After nine years at West Brom, Daniels eventually made his Premier League debut, at the age of 25, against Everton on 24 August 2013. He came on as a substitute for first-choice goalkeeper Ben Foster, who had to be replaced due to injury.[11]

Scunthorpe United

On 22 January 2015, Daniels completed a move to Scunthorpe United after the League One side's two goalkeepers had both suffered broken arms in the same game against Bristol City the previous weekend. Daniels signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with Scunthorpe, who paid West Brom an undisclosed fee.[12]
