Mühlhäuser is a manufacturer of railbound and trackless tunnel construction equipment, such as narrow gauge rolling stock, rails, and switches; conveyor belts, concrete, and grouting and formwork equipment; and off-road service vehicles on rubber wheels.[1]
History
Mühlhäuser was funded in 1907 by three Mühlhäuser brothers. It is now owned by a fourth-generation family member, Hubertus Mühlhäuser, who took over the majority of the shares from his father, uncle and cousin 2013. As of 2015 the company employs approximately 120 employees at sites in Michelstadt and Brensbach and has global networking partners.[2] After implementing a new management, a number of important contracts were obtained, so that exceptionally good values could be achieved with both the incoming orders (€16 million in 2014 compared to €5 millions in 2013) and the orders in hand (€11 million in December 2014 compared to €1 million in December 2013).[3]
Mühlhäuser provided equipment for the construction of the Elbe Tunnel, the New York City Subway, the Channel Tunnel and the Gotthard Base Tunnel.[4] After the completion of the Channel Tunnel, Mühlhäuser bought back some of the used equipment and rented it out or sold it refurbished for other tunnel construction projects. For the Gotthard Base Tunnel they built bespoke ambulance trains, fire service trains and a big vacuum cleaner to remove any dust particles from the tunnel.[5]
