Maciej Cegłowski

Maciej Cegłowski is a Polish-American web developer, businessman and writer who is the owner of the bookmarking service Pinboard.[1][2][3][4] He formerly worked at Yahoo![5]

Cegłowski has publicised his business through his Twitter pages, which he uses to joke about the failings of other Silicon Valley companies. A frequent speaker at conferences on software development, he is known for criticising advertising-funded services with dubious business models.[6] He has described programatically generated advertising as a model that encourages the growth of surveillance, and compared large stocks of data on Internet users to the archives of Communist secret police services in his native Eastern Europe, as a threat to user privacy that may increase as archives remain in existence.[7][8][9][10] He has also criticised immersive web design for being bloated and unsuitable for consumers with a poor internet connection.[11][12][13][14]

Cegłowski has spoken at conferences about his experience running Pinboard, including listening to users from the fandom community and "failing really, really slowly" (working on a project for a long time instead of looking for immediate success).[15][16] Cegłowski has discussed prioritising simplicity and stability over using cutting-edge technologies for building Pinboard in order to reduce cost and allow his company to remain simple and practical for a single person to run.[1][12][17]

Cegłowski was born in Poland and emigrated to the United States in 1981.[11] He attended Middlebury College, where he studied Russian and French.
