Maddahi

An Iranian Maddah

Maddahi is a ceremonial singing specialized for Shia Muslims. People who croon this style are called Maddah. Maddahs mostly sing in Ahl al-Bayt's birth and death anniversary. The theme of maddahi may be joyous or sorrowful. Most of maddahs are men but few women perform it in only-ladies gatherings. The majority of Maddahis are sung in mourning of Ahl al-Bayt particularly Mourning of Muharram in beginning of Muharram until Day of Ashura and Arba'een.
