Madivala Machideva (ಮಡಿವಾಳ ಮಾಚಿದೇವ)(also known as Veera Ganacheeri Madivala Machideva) was a popular Legendary Great warrior also Freedom fighter and Saint of the 12th century. He belonged to Dhobi(Madivala) caste.
Early life and career
The great warrior Madivala Machideva fought valiantly against King Bijjala's army to protect manuscripts of Vachanas written by Sharanas and transported them from Basava Kalyan. He followed the veerashaiva/Lingayath dharma given by Vishwaguru Basavanna.
Madivala Machideva was the coeval Sharana of the Guru Basaveshwara. He fought against the communal forces which intended to destroy the Vachana Sahitya literature during the Kalyana Kranti. He worked to define the daily practice of Lingayath ethics. In his Vachana, he specified Basaveshwara invented Guru (preceptor),the godwin gnani
Linga, Jangama (Priest), Prasada (Grace of God, holy food, Phala/return for the good deed) and even seven worlds. In another Vachana Madivala Machideva witness the historical truth in a beautiful manner along with other essential aspects Basava Kalyan.

Machideva is a avatar purush of lord veerabhadra. Once when veerabhadra demolished the daksha yagna, after the victory he returned to kailash as he was entering the sabha of lord shiva ,while moving his uttariya seragu(dhotis end) touched one of the shiva bhaktas. In victory arrogance veerabhadra committed the mistake by disrespecting shiva ganas, lord shiva noticed this & cursed him to take birth on the earth in a madival family & clean the clothes of shiva sharanas make madi (purity) for them & come.
There are proof of madival machiva as avatar of veerbhadra in Gururaj charithre by poet siddhananjeshwar & also in Machidevra manovilasa.it is also sung in many janapada(folks) kathana & kavyas.machideva has been described as avatar of lord veerabhadra in granthas like chenna basava purana, singaraj purana, shivatatwa chintamani, basavapurana, prabhu lingaleele,amara ganadheeshwara charitre, bhairaveshwara kavya, kathasuthra ratnakar, sharana leelaamrutha, madival sanghatya & many more granthas
As per lord shivas order he was born to veershaiva couples of madival family,in todays vijayapura district, sindhagi taluk, devara hippargi village. its assumed that he might have born between 1120-1130 AD.he is elderly to basavanna, as basava was born in AD 1134.His parents were paravathaiya & sugnanauvva,there is not much about her wife,her name was malligauvva.his deity was kalidevaru which later he used it as his ankita nama ,we could see it behind his vachanas.As he was born in madival family he continued his fathers kayaka,as their was no access for education it was impossible as it was only reserved for Brahmins, kshatriyas & vayshas
As he was extra ordinary child mallikarjun guruji of hippargi saw his simplicity,devotion ,spirituality & eagerness to learn ,admitted him to his ashram & gave him diksha .he grew up to super personality & a great warrior as per his name machidev which mean makaya means well built up personality.
Machidevas mahime
He was very popular in his village ,he came to know about basavannas shivasharanara andolana in kalyana ,he took his gurus permission & blessing & moved to kalyana while travelling he came across river bhimarathi which was flowing at it highest ,he crossed it by swimming with out boat which was impossible by common man in the joy of meeting basavanna
Machaiya was getting special attention in mahamane /anubhava mantapa ,because of some people were jealous of him ,once when he was doing his daily kayaka & returning back to mahamane, one guy touched his madi clothes of shivasharana & polluted it, machaiya got angry & hit the guy by hands to death,as it should not trouble, shivasharanas in mahamane. he washed all the clothes once again & returned to mahamane. he was also popular as veeragante he never allowed anyone to touch the clothes of shiva sharana he use to ring the bell as he was coming, people use to move away from his path & maintain certain distance
Some of the Brahmins who were against machaiya complained to king bijjala . bijjala got irritated & ordered to crush machaiyas head under the legs of elephant upto death, his soldier went to the way were machideva use to move daily for his kayaka ,soldiers caught him machaiya throw his bag up into sky, he hit the soldiers to death ,machaiya held the trunk of elephant throw it far away which ran into forest . he did all this within a fraction of seconds, the time the bag came down which he throw it up before
Every one was surprise to see this act. all soldiers ranned away ,machaiya moved towards kalyana with anger, bijjala came to know about this incident, he was totally afraid & feared machaiya will kill him, basavanna was his minister he interrupted & asked bijjala to ask sorry to machideva,enormous & kind hearted machaiya pardoned bijjala ,this incident made machaiya popular in kalyana, he was more respected in mahamane & it showed his capabilities to his enemies
His bhakti
Machideva was beloved one in mahamane ,all shivasharanas addressed him as machitande (father machideva) he wrote many vachanas ,once one jangama came to him & asked to make madi of some clothes with out using water he was surprised & stunned to hear this,he was thinking how to satisfy this jangama,his wife malligauvva suggested him to wash the clothes from her blood she tore her heart followed by machideva cleaned & prepared the madi ,the jangama was non other than lord shiva he came into his original form, was pleased with their kayaka bhakti & blessed them
Once in mahamane basavanna sayed, how poor he was with out any needy(poor) to take dana(offering)to perform dasoha. Machideva who heared this was very upset, saying arrogancy has also invaded my basavanna. machideva kicked some water by his right leg, which scattered on ground & water drops were converted as diamonds. basavanna who saw this prayed machitande to pardon his arrogancy.

Madhuvaiya Brahmin decided to marry her daughter to low caste haralaya son, as this was an inter caste marriage , all shiva sharanas knew that result would yield a change, basavanna & all shiva sharanas permitted to go ahead as both the parents & couples had no objection for this marriage. As the marriage took on ,Brahmins in the society were against this ,they complained king bijjala, bijjala in his court considered this marriage as crime ordered to kill the madhuvaiya ,haralaya & couples. He also ordered to destroy vachanas & kill shiva sharanas
Basavanna lost his prime minister post, was ordered by bijjala to leave kalayana with immediate effect,basavanna left to kudalasangamma ,later were he went on to lingaikya Samadhi. Machidev was elder in mahamane as allama prabhu has already left to forest , basavanna asked machideva to save the vachanas & protect shivasharana from bijjala army before leaving kalyana, machideva took a lead role in fighting bijjalas army,he was the leader of all shiva sharanas brigade Machideva with chenna basvanna ,akka nagamma,gangambike,kinnaribommaiya,hadapada rechanna,dohar kakkaiya & many more other shivasharanas left to ullavi which is in todays karwar district.on way many sharanas lost their life while travelling & fighting with bijjala,s army Machideva fought bravely with bijjalas army & reached ullavi & established a mahamane their & protected vachanas,it is heard that later he moved to his village devara hippergi were later he achieved immortality or lingaikya samadhi
