Magoffin County High School (MCHS) is a public education high school located in Salyersville, Kentucky in Magoffin County. MCHS is the only High School in the county and progressed from previous versions of Magoffin County's High Schools. The school mascot is the Hornet. Magoffin County's previous High School, The Magoffin County Institute was Salyersville's first high school, and was founded in 1908 by Reverend A. C. Harlowe. Before the 1970s, Magoffin County High School was known as the Salyersville High School and was located in a different building which is now known as the Magoffin County Alternative School.

Starting in 2004, Magoffin County Superintendent, Don Cecil, and Athletic Director, Sam Miller(MCS-TV Coordinator), teamed up with Salyersville's local cable provider, Howard Cable, to create Magoffin County Schools Television (MCS-TV). The channel's programming includes school athletics games, club created programs, field trip memorial videos and other original programming focused on Magoffin County's public schools.

Career and technical development

Adjacent to the Magoffin County High School is the Magoffin County Career & Technical Center (MCCTC). The career development offered by MCCTC include Electricity, Carpentry, Welding, Computing and Horticulture, among other things.

Clubs

Magoffin County High School offers many clubs to its students. These include 4-H, Academic Team, Art Club, Band, CYC, FBLA, FCCLA, FFA, Girl's Club, Horse Club, HOSA, JKG, Key Club, Mu Alpha Theta, Peer Tutors, PSI, SADD, Science Club, Spirit Club, STLP, Upward Bound, Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA) and the Yearbook Staff.

Sports

Magoffin County High School offers many extra-curricular sports activities. These include Boy's Baseball, Boy's and Girl's Basketball, Cheerleading, Boy's and Girl's Cross Country, Dance Team, American Football, Girl's Fast Pitch Softball, Golf, Boy's & Girl's Tennis, Boy's and Girl's Track & Field and Girl's Volleyball.In 2006, Head Coach Steve Miller and his Magoffin County Lady Hornets basketball team won the 15th Regional Basketball Championship. Additionally, the Boys and Girls Track and Field teams have produced numerous individual regional championships with respectful placings in State Track and Field competitions. The Magoffin County High School Dance Team has won many regional and state titles as well.
