Maheen Khan (Urdu: ماہین خان) is a fashion and costume designer,[1] also an award winner fashion designer for fashion labels like The Embroidery House, Maheen and Gulabo.[2] Maheen has done many national and international fashion events and shows.[3] She is well known for her embroidered for the film Snow White and the Huntsman and television series The Jewel in the Crown.[2]

Career

Khan started her career in the fashion industry as a designer in 1972.[2] Maheen has designed many costumes and embroidery for films like Sweeney Todd, The Phantom of the Opera, Elizabeth, Elizabeth: The Golden Age and many others.[2] She also done many costumes for theatres and opera.[4]

Maheen also done many fashion events and shows in Pakistan as well as international.[3] She is also the CEO of Fashion Pakistan Week.[5] She has also designed for the international fashion events. Maheen also showcased her collection at the Milan Fashion Week where she got the title of Coco Chanel of the East.[4] She also designed dresses for the famous celebrities like Benazir Bhutto, Jemima Khan, Ghinwa Bhutto, Princess Sarvath al-Hassan and Princess Salimah Aga Khan.[4]

Early life

Born Maheen Abbas on the 19th of May, 1945 to Zahra Abbas and Mirza Abbas, she was the third among four sisters. Her impatient demeanor as a child helped her later in life as she was successful in landing a job at a women’s magazine soon after school, where she contributed various articles on beauty and fashion.

After marriage in 1965, Maheen started a small tailoring establishment, which propelled her fashion career into stardom and by 1975, she had become a household name in fine tailoring.

Embroidery House

Some of the work with Diane Holmes includes embroidery for The Aristocrats, Mozart, Last Prince, Alexander, Elizabeth, Snow White and the Huntsman, Maleficent, Cinderella.

A proud moment for Maheen was being commissioned by Harrods to make a replica of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth's coronation dress for the 60th anniversary celebrations. Harrods ultimately decided not to go with it so she presented the sampler to the British High Commission in Karachi.
