The place of origin of the Mahils is supposed to have been Lahore. Due to not agreeing with the Mughal view on non-Muslims, they fell out with them and moved to the East Punjab, where they settled in several villages.
The "Mahals are the stout-hearted inhabitants of the Maha belt dominated by Sikhs, whose forefathers had borne the brunt of every foreign invasion from the north-west, losing courage against the indiscriminate killings." The Mahal's were famous for their strong build and their hard-working attitude because they worked in the army or very far away from their homes in farms or ranches. The Mahals or Mahils are also to have been known to be in Porus's army that faught with Alexander the Great - in Punjab. Some later joined the army of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The Mahil Jats are believed to be descended from the ancient and nomadic Scythians.

Mahil Gaila also known as Mahil Gehlan is believed to have been established by four (Jat) brothers after the exodus from Lahore. Legend has it that the Moghul's in Lahore wanted to 'take' or marry one of the Mahil girls see ref to Jats. The elders got together came up with a scheme. They sent the women and children ahead the day before. When the Mogul's arrived for the 'marriage' they were invited into a tent and told to make themselves comfortable. The Mahil men then put wood and tinder around the tent and set it alight and fled. Four Mahil brothers who's names were Goda, Mahil, Dessu, and Gaila settled in Mahil Gaila near Nawanshare and started farming. Traders (others casts) soon came to the village and the village grew over time. Men from this village travelled to the US and Canada in the late 1800 to work on the railways and in the mines. Some remained there (Pal Singh) and waited until the law allowed them to marry Indian women. Others returned with their earnings and bough larger farms in the village (Dhanna Singh).
