State Route 238 is part of Maine's system of numbered state highways, located on Southport Island It runs for 3.76 miles (6.05 km) entirely within the town of Southport. The short highway traverses the eastern edge of the island, serving as an alternate to State Route 27, which runs roughly parallel on the western side of the island.

Route description

SR 238 begins in the south at an intersection between Hendricks Hill Road (SR 27), Town Landing Road, and Cape Newagen Road (which carries SR 238) near the southern tip of the island. This intersection is also the southern terminus of SR 27. A right turn from SR 238's southern end is the northbound beginning of SR 27, and a left turn at SR 27's southern end is the northbound beginning of SR 238, although there is no signage indicating this, save for the first northbound reassurance shield of each route nearby.

From this intersection, SR 238 proceeds almost directly north, paralleling the eastern coast of the island and providing access to various local roads. North Cross Road, about two-thirds of the way north, provides a direct connection between SR 27 and SR 238, as well as the western and eastern parts of the island. SR 238 continues for another mile before terminating at SR 27, which leaves the island and crosses into Boothbay Harbor to the northeast.

SR 238 does not intersect any numbered highways between its endpoints.

History

Designated in 1975, SR 238 was the newest route in Maine's highway system until the designation of SR 26A in 2006.
