Mairbek Vakhaevich Taisumov (Russian: Майрбек Вахаевич Тайсумов; born August 8, 1988 in Chechnya) is a Russian naturalized Austrian of Chechen descent mixed martial artist. He fights in the Lightweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.[3]
Background
Mairbek Taisumov was born on August 8, 1988, in Grozny the capital of the Chechen Republic, Russia. He is an ethnic Chechen. Taisumov fights out of Vienna, Austria and trains at Tiger Muay Thai in Phuket, Thailand.[4] Taisumov started his sporting career as a football player. However, he soon realized that fighting was his true passion and so he devoted himself completely to martial arts. Taisumov made his professional MMA debut in 2007.[5] He is a devout Sunni Muslim.
Mixed martial arts career
M-1 Global
Taisumov spent much of his career fighting for M-1 Global. Taisumov made his M-1 Global debut against Borys Mankowski on February 5, 2010 and won the fight via TKO in the second round.[6]
Taisumov faced Julien Boussuge on May 29, 2010 at M-1 Selection 2010: Western Europe Round 3. Taisumov won the fight via KO in the first round.[7]
Taisumov faced Serhiy Adamchuk on July 22, 2010 at M-1 Selection 2010: Eastern Europe Finals. Taisumov won the fight via submission in the first round and won the M-1 Selection Eastern Europe Tournament.[8]
Taisumov faced Artem Damkovsky for the M-1 Global Lightweight Championship on October 28, 2010 at M-1 Challenge 21. Taisumov suffered an eye poke in the third round and lost the fight via doctor stoppage.[9]
Taisumov faced M-1 veteran Yuri Ivlev on March 5, 2011 at M-1 Challenge 23 and won the fight via TKO in the second round.[10]
Taisumov faced Josh Bacallao on July 8, 2011 at M-1 Challenge 26 and won the fight by knockout in the first round.[11]
Taisumov faced Joshua Thorpe on November 20, 2011 at M-1 Global: Fedor vs Monson. Taisumov won the fight via knockout in the second round.[12]
Taisumov faced Marat Gafurov on June 21, 2012 at M-1 Global: Fedor vs Rizzo. Taisumov lost the fight via split decision.[13]
Taisumov was expected to face Musa Khamanaev for the M-1 Global Lightweight Championship on November 15, 2012 at M-1 Challenge 35[14] but the bout was cancelled for unknown reasons.[15] Taisumov instead faced Leon Del Gaudio and won the fight via submission in the first round.[16]
Taisumov faced Niko Puhakka on June 8, 2013 at M-1 Challenge 40 and won the fight via submission due to leg kicks in the first round.[17]
In his final M-1 Global bout Taisumov faced Artem Damkovsky in a rematch on November 30, 2013 at M-1 Challenge 44. Taisumov won the rematch via submission in the third round.[18]
Ultimate Fighting Championship
Taisumov made his UFC debut against Tae Hyun Bang on January 4, 2014 at UFC Fight Night 34.[19] He won the fight via a dominant unanimous decision.[20]
Taisumov was expected to face UFC veteran Gleison Tibau on March 23, 2014 at UFC Fight Night 38.[21] However, Tibau pulled out of the bout due to a knee injury and was replaced by Michel Prazeres.[22] Taisumov lost the fight via unanimous decision.[23]
Taisumov faced Marcin Bandel on October 4, 2014 at UFC Fight Night 53.[24] He won the fight via TKO in the first round.[25]
Taisumov was expected to face Yan Cabral on January 24, 2015 at UFC on Fox 14.[26] However, Cabral pulled out of the fight due to a knee injury and was replaced by promotional newcomer Anthony Christodoulou.[27] He won the fight via KO in the second round.[28]
The fight against Christodoulou was the last fight of Taisumov's entry contract with UFC, and he announced a new, five-fight contract on Twitter on February 8, 2015.[29]
Taisumov faced Alan Patrick on June 20, 2015 at UFC Fight Night 69.[30] He won the fight via TKO in the second round, also earning a Performance of the Night bonus.[31][32]
Taisumov was expected to face Beneil Dariush on January 17, 2016 at UFC Fight Night 81.[33] However, Dariush pulled out of the fight in early December citing injury and was replaced by Chris Wade.[34] In turn, Taisumov was pulled from the fight during the week leading to the event due to alleged visa issues and was replaced by Medhi Baghdad.[35]
Taisumov faced promotional newcomer Damir Hadzović on April 10, 2016 at UFC Fight Night 86.[36] He won the fight by TKO in the first round and also earned a Performance of the Night bonus.[37][38]
