Malindi Airport (IATA: MYD, ICAO: HKML) is an airport in Kenya. It is located in Kilifi County, in the town of Malindi, in southeastern Kenya, at the Indian Ocean coast.

Its location is approximately 412 kilometres (256 mi), by air, southeast of Nairobi International Airport, the country's largest civilian airport.[2] The geographic coordinates of this airport are:3° 12' 54.00"S, 40° 6' 0.00"E (Latitude: -3.215000; Longitude:40.100000).

Overview

The airport is a medium-sized airport that serves the town of Malindi. Situated at 76 feet (23 m) above sea level,[3] the airport has two bitumen runways: Runway 17/35 measures 4,600 feet (1,400 m) long and is 98 feet (30 m) wide,[4] and Runway 8/26 measures 3,549 feet (1,082 m) and is 76 feet (23 m) wide.[5]

An initiative by the Kenyan government earmarked funds for the updating and expansion of Malindi Airport. A new terminal building was constructed and opened in July 2012.[6]

Future expansion

The Kenyan government seeks to expand Malindi Airport in order to attract direct international flights. Plans are underway to extend Runway 17/35 to a length of 2,900 metres (9,500 ft)[7] and to increase the size of the apron to accommodate more aircraft.[8]
