Malinslee is an estate in the Town of Telford and Wrekin.

Location

It is very near to the Town Park and the Telford Shopping Centre, Dawley neighbours it.

Current and Future Amenities

The estate has a doctors, some shops, a fish and chip shop and a hairdresser.

It has a grade II* listed church called St. Leonard's which was designed by Thomas Telford in 1805.[1]

St Leonard's was designed by Thomas Telford in 1805

Malinslee has in recent years had a lot of new work carried out, currently a new doctor's surgery is being built to match the modern shops that have been created.

Near the shops is a new playground area.

History

Previously it had a pub, the Shropshire Lad which also had a bowling green, however this was knocked down to make way for a new school and new shops.

It used to have an old Spar shop which was ultimately burnt down.

The estate had a Youth Centre, near the church: however this was subject to a lot of vandalism and was knocked down the early 2000s.

Schools

The old schools were called St. Leonard's Primary School and Langley Junior School, these were demolished to make way for a new school called Old Park School.

As well as this it had a school called Malinslee Junior School, which was demolished to make way for housing.

Playing Fields

Malinslee has its own playing fields called 'The Church Wickets', in the past these were full of football goal posts and every Sunday usually saw a Sunday League game going on (both adult and junior).

However, in recent years the fields have had the goal posts removed, now they are mainly used for people to walk dogs etc. However a BMX course was created at the side of the fields as well as a small playing park.

Malinslee used to have a junior and youth football team called Malinslee Athletic in the 1990s, they played at the old Malinslee School and also at the Church Wickets, however they renamed as Dawley Youth when they moved to the latter. Again they stopped playing in the 1990s.

Famous Old Residents

Former WBC super middleweight boxing title holder Richie Woodhall lived on the estate in his younger years.
