Mamat Khalid (born April 6, 1963) is a Malaysian screenwriter and film director of Malay descent. He is the younger brother of cartoonist Datuk Mohammad Nor Khalid, better known as Lat.[1] Before venturing into film-making, Mamat worked in a government office. He is an avid fan of rock music, which inspired him to write and direct his 2005 film, Rock.[1]

Early life

Mohamad bin Mohamad Khalid, better known as Mamat Khalid, was born on 6 April 1963 in Ipoh, Perak. As a young boy, he used to go to the cinemas every other day to catch the latest movies. Unfortunately, his hobby didn't resonate well with his father, who even banned him from frequenting cinemas on his deathbed. However, that didn't break young Mamat's passion for films.

One of his heroes is the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee.
