Development
The film was officially announced on 14 October 2015 by critically acclaimed Telugu director Chandra Sekhar Yeleti with Mohanlal and Gautami in lead roles, which will be simultaneously made in Telugu and Malayalam languages, produced by Sai Korrapati under the banner Varahi Chalana Chitram. Manamantha will be Mohanlal's second film in Telugu after a cameo appearance in Gandeevam (1994).[4] And the film will be Gautami's return to Malayalam cinema after 17 years. She will be dubbing herself for both the versions.[5] Mohanlal and Gautami are teaming after a gap of 18 years from Iruvar (1997) directed by Maniratnam.[6] There was also talks with Irrfan Khan for an important role.[7] Filming was said to start in the third week of November and Mohanlal gave his 25 days for filming. According to Yeleti, "The film is a family entertainer which involves four stories".[8] In October, the production team also announced a casting call for a teenage girl.[9]
Filming
The film was formally launched in Hyderabad on 29 November 2015 and began its regular filming there on 30 November. The film's Telugu version is titled Manamantha.[10] Malayalam actor Mohanlal took the decision to learn Telugu language by enlisting a translator to get his diction precise, as he wanted it to be as close as possible to that of a native Telugu speaker. According to the film's associate-director Siby Jose Chalissery, Mohanlal is trying two different acting styles for each version in Telugu and Malayalam, and taking extra care for bringing that difference. "Though it's a bilingual, the scenes aren't exactly similar in the two versions. There are variations in the mannerisms, emotions and dialogue delivery,". The filming will be completed by January end.[5] Mohanlal completed his portions by January third week.[11]
