The school has a strong sporting tradition and despite being in a remote location has a strong academic programme bolstered by Video Conferencing lessons and the OtagoNet project.[4] The school also uses the internet as a learning tool as is shown by our Year 7 Wikispace .

International Students

Maniototo Area School hosts international students aged 11–18 and attracts those interested in a rural environment with a vibrant winter sports centre[5] and the Otago Rail Trail.[6]

Bute Beds

One area of special interest at the school is 'Bute Beds'. These are two fully furnished houses rented out as 'Bed and Breakfast' units by the school. These are used to support social studies projects and to provide extra resources.
