Manisha Koirala filmography
Manisha Koirala is a Nepalese actress known for her work in Bollywood films. Koirala's debut was in the Nepali film Pheri Bhetaula (1989).[1] Two years later, she made her Bollywood debut in Subhash Ghai's Saudagar which was a commercial success.[2][3] However she followed this with appearances in a series of films which performed poorly at the box office including First Love Letter (1991), Anmol (1993), and Dhanwan (1993).[2] Koirala's career had a turnaround when she starred in Vidhu Vinod Chopra's 1942: A Love Story (1994).[2][4] Her performance was critically acclaimed and she earned a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress.[2][4][5] The following year, Koirala received the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress and the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Tamil for playing a Muslim married to a Hindu during the Bombay Riots in the Mani Ratnam-directed Tamil drama Bombay (1995).[2][5][6][7]
For portraying the daughter of a mute and deaf couple in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Khamoshi: The Musical (1996) she garnered a consecutive second Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress.[2][6][8] Koirala followed this with appearances in films including Agni Sakshi (1996), Gupt: The Hidden Truth (1997) which were among the highest grossing of their respective years at the Indian box office.[9][10] She also played a terrorist opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Ratnam's Dil Se..., the first Indian film to reach the top ten in the United Kingdom box office.[11] However Koirala also appeared in many films which performed poorly at the box office such as Dil Ke Jharokhe Mein (1997), Achanak (1998) which led to a decline in her film career.[2][8] She made her television debut as the co-host of Sawaal Dus Crore Ka opposite Anupam Kher. The show did not perform well in terms of ratings and both Kher and Koirala were fired.[12] For her role in Ram Gopal Verma's 2002 crime thriller Company she received her third Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress.[13] The following year, she appeared in Escape from Taliban for which Koirala garnered the Bengal Film Journalists' Association Award for Best Actress (Hindi).[14]
In 2004, she made her debut as a producer with the film Paisa Vasool. The following year, Koirala starred as Mughal princess Jahan Ara in the historical drama Taj Mahal: An Eternal Love Story.[15] In 2008, she played the eponymous role in the film Tulsi, a Hindi remake of the Telugu drama Matru Devo Bhava and starred in Rituparno Ghosh's Khela. Two years later Koirala appeared in the Malayalam drama Elektra. In 2012, she reteamed with Ram Gopal Verma on the horror sequel Bhoot Returns. Later in the year, she took a break from acting after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. After six months of treatment, Koirala was given the all clear.[16][17] In 2015, she returned to acting with the psychological thriller Chehere: A Modern Day Classic.[18]
