Marcel Kars (born May 20, 1977 in Toronto, Ontario) is a Dutch/Canadian professional ice hockey player, currently playing for Hys in the Eredivisie.
Early career
He spent one year with the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League before going on to play four years of collegiate hockey for the University of Guelph.
Professional career
Kars spent four seasons (2002-03 through to 2005-06) in the Netherlands, the country of his ancestry, playing first for the Amstel Tijgers and then the Amsterdam Bulldogs There he won 6 trophies, 3 beker cups and 3 lands championships. Kars scored both goals in the championship game as the Bulldogs beat the Tilburg Trappers 2-1 in the final game of the playoffs. Kars spent the summer joining the North Stars in Australia in 2006 for their summer campaign. On August 6, 2006, while playing for the Newcastle North Stars, Kars lit up the Canberra Knights for 12 points (8 goals, 4 assists) in a 21-2 victory in Newcastle. There they won the championship. Kars was the leagues leading scorer.
Kars then went on to play one year in Italy for Future Bolzano in the A2 league. He then returned to play in his home country for Amsterdam again before leaving to finish the year in Deegendorf in the Oberliga in Germany.
International career
Kars also represents the Netherlands in international competition, participating in the last four IIHF World Championship Division I campaign and in qualifying for the Turin Olympics.
Personal life
Kars was born and raised in Toronto, the son of Dutch immigrants.
