Mark James Rylands (born 11 July 1961) is a British Anglican bishop. Since 2009, he has been the area Bishop of Shrewsbury in the Church of England.
Early life
Rylands was born on 11 July 1961,[4] the son of Thomas Rylands, sometime canon, Vicar of Wilton and Rural Dean of Malpas.[5] He was educated at Shrewsbury School, the College of St Hild and St Bede and Trinity College, Bristol.[6]
Ordained ministry
He was ordained in 1988 and began his career with a curacy at St George's, Stockport.[7] He was then Vicar of Acton and Worleston, Cheshire and from 1997 to 2002 Team Rector for Langport, Somerset. Since then until his elevation to the Episcopate[8] he has been Diocesan Missioner and a Canon Residentiary at Exeter Cathedral.[9]
Episcopate
Rylands was consecrated a bishop at Westminster Abbey on 28 October 2009 and installed as Bishop of Shrewsbury at Lichfield Cathedral on 2 November 2009.[1][3][10]
Personal life
His wife Amanda is also a priest and they have two adult children, Frances and Samuel.
