Martha Sturdy
Martha Varcoe Sturdy (born 1942 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) is a Canadian fine artist and sculptor. She received her BFA at Emily Carr University,[1] where she was later granted an Honorary Doctor of Letters in 2006[2] Sturdy's known for her art on wall, standing steel, salvaged wood, resin[3] and wearable sculpture[4]
Her work is published in American, Italian and French Vogue, Harperʼs Bazaar, ELLE and Espana. She designed for the Oscar de la Renta, Marc Jacobs and Donna Karan.[5] Martha applied art on home furnishings using resin, steel, brass and salvaged cedar.[6]
In 2002, Sturdy received a Golden Jubilee Award by the Governor General of Canada[7] for her achievements towards art. In 2005 she was inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA).[8] In 2010, Sturdy was commissioned for a permanent 28-foot steel sculpture weighing 5,000 kilograms[9] in the healing garden at Vancouver General Hospital.[10]
Sturdy is currently represented by Orie Gallery, in Tokyo and at her own gallery in Vancouver, BC. She lives at West Vancouver[11] and also at her 250-acre farm in Pemberton, BC. where she says that she uses the natural landscape for inspiration in art.[12]
She has three children, one of them being the Canadian MLA, Jordan Sturdy.
