Marty J. Jackley (born October 13, 1970) is an American attorney from the U.S. state of South Dakota. He serves as the Attorney General of South Dakota. Previously, he served as the United States Attorney for the District of South Dakota.

Early life and education

Marty was raised in Sturgis, South Dakota and graduated from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 1992 with his B.S. in electrical engineering cum laude. He received his J.D. from the University of South Dakota School of Law in 1995.

Career

From 1995-97, Jackley served as a law clerk for former Chief Judge Richard Battey in federal district court. Jackley joined the Rapid City law firm of Gunderson, Palmer, Nelson, and Ashmore. As a partner, his practice areas focused on construction & engineering law and real property disputes. At that time, he also served as a Special Assistant Attorney General for South Dakota prosecuting controlled substance felonies.

US Attorney for the District of South Dakota

In 2006, Jackley was recommended by U.S. Senator John Thune and nominated by President George W. Bush to be United States Attorney for the District of South Dakota. Later in 2006, Jackley was unanimously confirmed by the US Senate. Marty was named the South Dakota Prosecutor of the Year in 2008 from the South Dakota State’s Attorneys Association. Jackley was succeeded as U.S. Attorney by Brendan Johnson.

Attorney General of South Dakota

Rounds appointed Jackley to succeed Larry Long as Attorney General of South Dakota in 2009.[1] Jackley won reelection in 2010[2] and in 2014.[3]

Personal life

Marty and his wife Angela live in Pierre, South Dakota with their two children, Michael and Isabella. Marty also presently serves as Chairman of the Conference of Western Attorneys General and Vice-Chairman of the National Association of Attorneys General.
