Biography

Dr. Copeland was the middle child in a family of five. She has an older sister and brother and two younger brothers. When Copeland was a child, her mother spent 8 years, from the ages of 37 to 45, in a state mental institution, diagnosed with severe and supposedly incurable manic depression, now known as bipolar disorder. With support from a hospital volunteer and a nurse, her mother got well, was discharged and went on to lead an active and rich life. Her mother's experience encouraged her in her own quest for relief from emotional distress. Dr. Copeland is now well-known and widely recognized for her work in the field of mental health recovery.

In 2005, Dr. Copeland created the non-profit, Copeland Center for Wellness and Recovery that trains people to facilitate WRAP groups. The Center has grown since then and now thousands of people are trained to facilitate WRAP groups, groups where people learn how to develop a Wellness Recovery Action Plan.

Copeland is the owner of Peach Press which publishes many of her books and other works. They can be found at http://www.WRAPandRecoveryBooks.com.

Dr. Copeland was awarded the United States Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association's USPRA John Beard Award for outstanding contributions to the field of psychosocial rehabilitation in 2006 and the [Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration]]'s Lifetime Achievement Voice Award in 2009.
