Maryam Hashemi (Persian: مریم هاشمی) is an Iranian visual artist based in Hackney Wick, East London, United Kingdom. She grew up in Tehran and graduated in Graphic Design from Azad University in 2001 and has been living in the UK since 2002. She is a figurative painter, currently working in the Magical Realist style but some of her works are closer to Surrealism, her subjects are mostly women and recently many of her works are in the form of self-portraits. She has been known for her works in watercolors and pencil, but her recent works are also produced with acrylic on canvas, recreations and installation.

From 2005 she developed a fascination and a connection with the London waterways which got her involved with the London Canal Museum (2005-2011) as a Trustee and Volunteer and Events Co-ordinator. She has expressed this interest in many of her works which portray her gradual lifestyle change towards living on water.

She has been exhibiting in many museums and art centres including the London Canal Museum,[1] Watermans Arts Centre,[2] The Broadway and artsdepot.[3]

She has been featured on TV and radio shows including BBC2 Making Art,[4] and has been part of many festivals including Edinburgh Iranian Festival,[5] London Persian-English Theatre Festival[6] and Hackney WickED.[7]
