Maspeth High School

Maspeth High School is a public high school in Elmhurst, Queens; it is the only high school in Maspeth As of September 2011. Maspeth High School opened in September 2011 with 273 students at the Metropolitan Avenue High School complex in Forest Hills, Queens and serves primarily students from NYC District 24 in Northern Queens. Maspeth High School is a traditional, open enrollment, district public school.

After one year at Metropolitan Avenue, Maspeth High School moved to its own building located at 54-40 74th Street in Elmhurst, Queens, adjacent to the Long Island Expressway and between 57th Avenue and Grand Avenue. Maspeth High School is one of the only classical public high schools in New York City and it requires Freshman and Sophomores to take Mandarin Chinese, while Juniors and Seniors take Latin. Also required, is four years of Fine or Performing Arts, and following a strict dress code. Currently Maspeth High School serves grades 9-12 and has 973 students. Maspeth High School has over 30 clubs and currently has 7 varsity sports teams. Maspeth's teams are known as the Argonauts.

The founding principal of Maspeth High School is Khurshid Abdul-Mutakabbir who proposed a classical high school model to the New York City Department of Education in December 2010. His proposal was accepted on January 4, 2011 and matched to the newly constructed Maspeth High School campus building for opening the following September.

Accolades

In 2015,the Boy's varsity basketball team, coached by Anastasia Bitis, went undefeated in their official season, qualifying for playoffs and winning the 2014-2015 city championships in the Queens B west league.

The Boy's Varsity Tennis team, coached by Ryan Stansfield qualified for the PSAL playoffs making it all to way to the finals where they placed in second.

Class of 2015 - 77% of students are on track to graduate and demonstrate proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics as defined by the CUNY standards for passing out of remedial coursework.
