Matthew Koma (born Matthew Bair,[1] June 2, 1987) is an American singer, songwriter and DJ born in Brooklyn and raised on Long Island, New York.[2] Inspired by Elvis Costello and Bruce Springsteen, Koma started his music career in punk rock, later transitioning into a mixture of genres ranging from Pop and Hip Hop to Electronic Dance Music.[2] Koma's early collaborations include work with Hardwell, Zedd, Miriam Bryant, Sebastian Ingrosso, Alesso, Tiesto, Vicetone and Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic.[3] His collaboration with Zedd has been his most notable accomplishment to date with their song "Spectrum" being premiered by Rolling Stone[4] and spending two weeks at number 1 on the Billboard Dance Club chart.[5]
Career
Koma was noticed by Jimmy Iovine who signed him to Interscope Records after watching an acoustic performance of the record "She".[6] He later released his first EP, Parachute, in May 2012, in which he wrote, produced and co-produced all four tracks with collaborators Twice as Nice, Alex da Kid, Sam Watters, Louis Biancaniello, and Ari Levine.[7] Since then he has taken part in the Sorry For Party Rocking worldwide tour with LMFAO and Far East Movement,[8] and more recently finished touring with the band Owl City.[9] In March 2012, Bruce Springsteen released "Rocky Ground," a remix that Koma co-produced with Ron Aniello as a single from his album Wrecking Ball.[10]
In 2012 Koma also did the main vocals for the song End of Pretend by Black Cards.
In the spring of 2013, Koma toured Europe supporting Ellie Goulding alongside Charli XCX.
2014 proved to be a pivotal year for Koma. He paired up with DJ Hardwell on his single "Dare You",[11] appeared on RAC's debut album featuring on the single "Cheap Sunglasses,".[12] EDM star Audien's single "Serotonin,"[13] and on Showtek's "Cannonball (Earthquake)"[14] which reached number one on the UK Dance Chart.[15]
In addition to both co-writing and featuring, Matthew put his unique touch as a producer on tracks from Tiësto's album A Town Called Paradise, including the hit single and Koma feature "Wasted".[16]
Matthew also contributed to Afrojack's debut album Forget the World- both co-writing and performing on the tracks "Keep Our Love Alive" and "Illuminate" on which he also co-produced.[17]
In January 2015, Koma was featured in Kia Motors' online video series Rediscovered, where he recorded a cover of The Miracles' "The Tracks of My Tears" before Smokey Robinson made a surprise visit in the studio.[18]
Koma collaborated with the The Knocks on "I Wish (My Taylor Swift)," which was released as a single in September 2015 and later appeared on the Knocks' 2016 album, "55."
Koma is currently working on his debut album, "Arcadia."[19]
Personal life
Koma attended Seaford High School in Seaford, NY.[20]
