Matthew Whelan (born 1 February 1988) is an Irish hurler who plays as a centre-back for the Laois senior team.[1]
Born in Borris-in-Ossory, County Laois, Whelan first excelled at hurling during his tenure at St. Fergal's College in Rathdowney. He arrived on the inter-county scene when he first linked up with the Laois minor team, before later lining out with the under-21 side. He made his senior debut in the 2007 National Hurling League. Whelan has been a regular fixture on team since that initial appearance, and has won one National Hurling League (Division 2) medal and one National Hurling League (Division 2A) medal.
At club level Whelan is a one-time intermediate championship medallist with Borris-in-Ossory.
