Maya Burman

Maya Burman (born 1971 in Paris)[1] is a contemporary artist of Indian parentage living in France.

Biography

Burman was brought-up in France. She initially trained as an architect, but found the profession too restrictive and turned her hand to painting.[2] She works mainly in pen and ink, and watercolor. This spontaneous media encourages her to create series of works, because overworking or reworking each painting with new ideas is difficult.[2] Her paintings are delicate and usually have a strong fantasy element. She has had several exhibitions of her work in India, France, and the UK, and won several prizes.

She is the youngest member of an extended family of eminent artists: her father, Sakti Burman (from Kolkota) and French mother Maite Delteil, are both prominent artists,[1] as are her cousin, Jayasri Burman and cousin's husband, Paresh Maity.

Personal life

Burman had an arranged marriage in India at age 23 and subsequently had a son. The marriage ended after two years and Burman returned with her son to France.[1]
