Meadowridge School is an independent, coeducational, secular, International Baccalaureate Continuum World School offering students a university preparatory education in Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada, serving students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12.
History
Meadowridge School was founded in September 1985. In September 1990, Meadowridge purchased 9.3 acres of land on 240th Street where four portables served as the school’s new location. After donations from parents, phase I construction began in 1991 on what is now the Grade 1 to 4 hallway. The school opened its doors to students at the new 240th street location in September 1992 and the second phase of construction began. The expansion consisted of two more classrooms, an art room, computer room, and science laboratory. By the end of this expansion, Meadowridge was composed of 69,000 square feet of academic space.[1]
In September 2013, constructions are complete on the Diploma Programme and Primary Year Program greenhouses, giving the students in science classes the opportunity for more accurate and complex lab experiences. By January, a new Gymnasium is complete with brand new flooring, score boards and clocks. As Meadowridge began its 30th year as a school in 2015, it celebrated the opening of its Early Learning Centre as well as the opening of new trails in the school’s North Forest.
Uniforms
Students at all levels are required to wear a school uniform. The school believes that uniforms provide a sense of inclusion, equality and school pride and that students must identify and distinguish themselves through their behavior rather than their appearance. There is a #1 uniform for Mondays, Fridays and special occasions. There is also a #2 uniform for general wear, and team sports uniforms and an athletic uniform for Physical Education.
Students have options within the uniform so that they can select a combination that meets their comfort and personal style.
Notable Alumni
Meadowridge is known for being the school at which Canadian race car driver Greg Moore once attended. A banner hangs in the school gymnasium in Greg's honor. Meadowridge was also the highschool attended by Nathan Kotylak, who attracted media attention when he was photographed setting fire to a police cruiser during the 2011 Vancouver Stanley Cup riots.[2]
