Meet the Blacks is a 2016 American comedy film directed by Deon Taylor, written by Taylor and Nicole DeMasi, and is a parody of the 2013 film The Purge. It stars Mike Epps, Gary Owen, Zulay Henao, Lil Duval, Bresha Webb, George Lopez and Mike Tyson, and was released on April 1, 2016 by Freestyle Releasing.[3][4]

Plot

After having stolen money from a famed criminal drug king (Charlie Murphy) and believing that he will be imprisoned for the next five to six years, Carl Black (Mike Epps) moves his family — consisting of his new wife, teenage daughter, vampire-wannabe son and fresh-out-of-prison cousin — to Beverly Hills, California on the same day when all crime becomes legal for a 12-hour period.

In its opening weekend the film grossed $4.085 million, finishing 8th overall and 3rd behind only Zootopia and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice for per-screen average at the box office [5]

As of May 3, 2016, Meet the Blacks has grossed $$8,880,985 in the United States, against a production budget of just $800,000.[6]

In the United States tracking suggested the film would gross $4–5 million from 1,115 theaters in its opening weekend, trailing fellow newcomer My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 ($20–24 million projection) and beating fellow newcomer, Richard Linklater's new film, Everybody Wants Some!! [7]

Critical response

Meet the Blacks received negative reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 13%, based on 8 reviews, with an average rating of 2.2/10.[8] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 26 out of 100, based on 4 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews".[9]
