Meishi Smile
Meishi Smile (often stylized as MEISHI SMILE) is an electronic music project operating out of Los Angeles, CA,[1] whose music is stylized by elements of noise music, J-pop and shoegaze.[2]
History
The project was formed in 2010 by Garrett Yim after expressing disinterest in his former project Yuko Imada.[3] Yim began recording music after hearing an album by Yellow Magic Orchestra[4] and randomly coming across the word "meishi."[5] The phrase "meishi smile" is said to represent a "formality masquerading as emotion."[6]
Later that year, Yim released his first song as Meishi Smile called SYNTHETIC GIRL on Zoom Lens.[7]
mYSTERIOUS sUMMER vACATION / LUST (2012-2015)
In 2012, Yim released his debut full-length album LUST with Orchid Tapes and his own label Zoom Lens,[8] as well as a remix EP entitled mYSTERIOUS sUMMER vACATION in 2013 on Japanese netlabel Maltine Records.[9] During that year, Yim performed at Anime Expo.[10]
Yim briefly went to Japan in 2014[11] to perform at Maltine Records' event Tokyo at LIQUID ROOM in Shibuya, Tokyo,[12] as well as Zoom Lens' first Japanese showcase at 2.5D.[13]
Yim expressed disinterest in the original recording of LUST due to lack of production skills[14] and released a remastered version of LUST in 2014 through Attack The Music and Zoom Lens. Later that year, Yim released a new single called Star on Maltine Records.[15]
In 2015, Yim debuted his first video on national television on Adult Swim with the video "AJS."[16]
...belong (2015-Present)
On May 21, 2015, Yim announced through an interview with The Fader that he was working on a forthcoming album entitled ...belong. Yim described the album as "...representation of the you. The indentation signifies hesitance when attempting to speak on behalf of your inner most self. The only thing you truly belong to is your own."[17]
A week later on May 28, 2015, Yim premiered a new single entitled Breathe.[18]
