Mel K. Norton is the 66th and current mayor of Saint John, New Brunswick in Canada. He was elected in the municipal election on May 14, 2012, and assumed office May 28, 2012.[1] He was preceded in office by Ivan Court.

Norton also served as a city councillor in Ward 3 until his swearing-in ceremony on May 21, 2012. He was first elected to council in a by-election in December 2010.

Political career

Norton began his political career first as a city councillor for Ward 3. On May 14, 2012, he defeated the incumbent mayor, Ivan Court, who was seeking reelection for his second term.

He garnered criticism when he broke a tie vote to consider moving Saint John to RCMP policing in the middle of contract negotiations with the Saint John Police Force.[2] Mayor Norton faced further criticism from the public and his own council in 2015 when it was revealed he had accepted free flights on J.D. Irving aircraft.[3]

In January 2015, Norton flirted with the idea of running for the Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party after the party under David Alward failed to win government during the September 22, 2014 general election. Norton was quoted as saying “I wouldn’t close any doors. That would be foolhardy because we don’t know what the future brings,” and intends to finish his term as mayor which ends in 2016.[4]
