Mercury Energy is a trade name used by a retail division of Mighty River Power, a state-owned New Zealand electricity generation and retail company. Mercury retails electricity and gas, primarily in the North Island of New Zealand. In 2015, Mercury had a 17% share of the New Zealand retail electricity market.[1]

Mercury Energy's name

This trade name came from Mercury Energy Limited, owner and operator of that division's business until it was obliged by the government to sell it. Mercury Energy Limited had been formed in 1994 by the Auckland Energy Consumer Trust to own and run the electricity supply business previously operated by community-owned local authority, Auckland Electric Power Board.
