Mescal Mountains, Arizona

The Mescal Mountains are a mountainous ridge in southern Gila County, Arizona. They have a high point elevation of 5,381 ft ( 1,640 m ). The mountain ridge is visible in the east from the Arizona State Route 77 in between Globe, Arizona and Winkelman, Arizona. The ridge is approximately 10 miles west of San Carlos Lake which lies on the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation, the ridge itself also mostly falls in the boundary of the reservation. As such hiking the ridge may require special permission from San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation, although no trails exist on the mountains themselves or leading to them. Their relative close proximity to the more visually dominant Pinal Mountains ( which is also visible from the same section of the AZ 77 highway ) make the ridge an often overlooked feature.
